Wondering if anyone has plans or pictures of a small type trailer that could be towed behind an ATV, but be small enough to take the wheels off and stick the platform in a truck box under the atv while traveling then one would take the ATV out and put the wheels on the trailer and hook it up to the ATV for hauling game or firewood when out in the bush.Any ideas?
Reply:Well it sounds like you have a concept in mind. Now off to the drawing board and see what explodes on paper! City of L.A. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:If you use high speed trlr. wheels it's gonna have to be a deal where ya leave the hubs on the trailer frame.  Be a real mess to have to remove the hubs, and keep the grease clean when you're transporting the thing in the back of the PU.  It might hurt your clearance to drive the ATV on back of the truck.  But maybe no big deal.Sides can be made to fit into stake pockets on the side rail of the trailer with hole drilled to pin 'em.  Also make provision for pinning the sides together where they meet at the top corners of the trailer.  This way the sides can be kd'd and tossed into the bed of the truck after ya got the trailer, and ATV stashed.  Same with the tongue.  It can be pinned if it's too long to fit in the truck bed.Axle can be made to swing down and away from the trailer bed and locked with a pinnable moveable brace.  Then you can swing them up to allow for loading the kd'd trailer deck to be loaded flat in the bed of the truck.
Reply:found where one fellow posted one he started to make, but he sold it to someone else who modified it, but looks like a design I could like.
Reply:Are the axles/wheels compatable height wise with the ATV.  I don't know much about ATV;s.  I see 'em, but I really never look close?
Reply:what I would do is just barely make it big enough for the four wheeler to fit in and light enough to tow with the four wheeler and tow with truck atv inside and tow with atv in the bush. thats what I did when I had my atv. and in my experience the hihg speed wheels sink to much in the bush and anchor the atv down.rear car bolt on wheel bearing from front wheel drive 15" aluminum wheels any 15" tire make a good combo and float well in the bush on the mud and snow.
Reply:Shows what I don't know   I figured those big flotation tires I see on ATV's were high speed tire/wheel assemblies.I thought that a guy would use the same kind of tires on the trailer to keep it up outta the mud.sorry
Reply:I guess I'm not thinkin' apples n apples.I have a lot of equipment with flotation tires that are rated for speeds not in excess of 25mph.  I also have some small carts that are meant for low speeds, and use a piece of cold roll round for an axle with a caged roller bearing mounted in the wheel, stuff for lawn tractors mostly.I figured that what ATV's I've seen around here are movin' along at a pretty good clip.  I thought that you're talkin' a high speed setup.
Reply:Here are pics of the one I built for my ATV Attached Images
Reply:Slick!!!!!!
Reply:Here is one that  I built some time back. To make it usable in the woods it must be no wider than the 4 wheeler in my opinion nothing worse than looking behind you all the time and getting hung up on trees. Reply:Good info, thanks for the pictures. Now, if I am to build it, I have a choice of 1 1/12"X 1 1/2" square tube or 2"X2" square tube, I think both are 1/8" although I came up with some that was .065" anyway, am curious as to what size to use, I really only planned it for using behind the atv once at camp, but maybe one should make it small yet allow it to be towed behind a vehicle to carry the ATV if needed, also, should I cut tubing at 45 degree and weld together or just I guess they would call it butt weld it, one end to the side of the other if you know what I mean.
Reply:I used 2x2 1/8 wall for the frame and 1x1 1/8 for the cargo box area. An atv trailer takes a beating all the time I use mine to haul a 1000 pounds of seed or corn to the wood or green fields. Regular tires for me would not work ATV tires take the bounce out of the trailer on rough roads or woods, if my atv can go through it my trailer needs to also. I chose ATV tires for that reason. A duel purpose trailer will not be real good for either application in my opinion to small and tippy for road use and to wide for real woods use. I made mine one inch narrower than my atv so it will go where my atv can go between trees and such. Just remember you need a 4 on 1 inch bolt pattern atv wheel to fit your hubs they dont make metric trailer hubs for resale. You can buy them at   http://www.4atvtires.com/ you will have to call and ask for atv wheels in a 4 and 1 bolt pattern then just buy 4 and 1 bolt pattern hubs northern tool has them cheap.Last edited by worm122; 09-02-2008 at 02:33 AM.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
Reply:As for the 45 or butt welding the tube I like my stuff to be clean looking, not taking the time to cut 45's to me looks like crap and allows water and dirt to get inside the tube leading to rust. if you are gonna do it do it right and clean looking.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
Reply:I agree with worm122 that mitered corners look the best but I have found that when using closed tubing for any outdoor project it will collect condensation on the inside, due to temperature changes. This condensation rots the tube from the inside un-noticed until there is sudden failure.I have found that leaving 1/2" or larger vent/drain holes in the bottom ends of the tube greatly reduces inside rot.
Reply:Nice work worm122. Nice Grizz too!! Did you make them racks on it too
Reply:WelderShaneNo I did not make the racks at the time I did not have a tubing bender now I do and am in the process of figuring out exactly what  I need so I can design some for my needs. Thanks for the comments on the trailer and Grizz that one is gone and  I now have a Grizz 700 EFI Power steering in camo NICE!!Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers

Reply:Worm122, that is an awesome trailer. That's just what I need on the farm for hauling stuff around like feed and brush. Outstanding work! I can't tell how you attached the tailgate. Did you weld on hinges or use some pins and pipe?
Reply:The tailgate is attached with barrel hinges that I purchased here http://sssonlinestore.com/SearchResu...ategoryID=6550Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammersThanks for the link to the hinges. Did you add any additional support under the bed that's not shown in your first picture? I was thinking the plywood might sag in between the two lateral pieces in your frame box.I saw the axle kits at Northern Tool but they're too wide. Did you shorten one or use something else? Thanks.Last edited by mvintx; 10-22-2008 at 11:19 PM.Reason: another question
Reply:There is no Plywood in the bed those are deck boards screwed into the 2x2 tubing. I called my local trailer maker in town and he built me a axle for $50.00. But buy a piece of pipe and weld in some axle tips out of NH for half that.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
