i have a HF 98233 tig and a hf 151 mig. i want to run one 220v outlet to my garage that i can use when i need to weld something up. i went into the basement to do some investigation and i looked at the dryer recepticle. its on a dual 30a braker. i was reading around some places and i seen some people used a 50a braker for there outlets. does the dual 30a=60amps or would i end yup getting a dual 50a braker? both welders use a 3 wire set up. ill prob need about 30 feet of wire.just looking for ruff estimates and suggestions on wall sockets, welder plugs, in wall wire, brakers ect.am i best off going to home depot or ordering supplies online?

Reply:It is not a Dual 30 amp breaker that = 60ampsIt is still only 30amps but @ 240vYou can pick up a basic "How To Electric" book at Home Depot- really go through it and don't do any work until you understand how your house electricity works and is wired. When you are ready Home Depot/Lowes will have what you need and is better than buying online because you can always return stuff you don't need-Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:skip HD and find an supply shop I save 40 cents a foot on my 6awg wire
Reply:look at your tag on your welders to see what ampreage they draw. Also look at if you are going to up size welders or other equipment a bigger line would be good.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:As others have said or implied, if you have to ask these questions, you probably should not do the work yourself, or at least without consulting with a knowledgeable person.  A book would help.A 50 amp 220 circuit (dual breaker) will run most welders, except for the larger industrial welders.  The tag on the back of the welder should say how much current it draws.  6 ga wire would be best for a 50 amp breaker, I recall. The 50 amp outlets are relatively cheap, around $10.  The breaker is probably less than $40, that leaves the wire.   I am going to guess around $100 altogether, although that is a guess.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:thanks rich, thats all i was asking. more then likely, i wont wire it up myself. i have a great uncle who is a master eletrician (retired). if i pulle enough teeth i can get him to come tie it into the box. but it would be alot esier if i can get the right supplies and lay the ground work first.
Reply:100' of #8 was recently about $70 at my Home Depot.  #6, which you might need if you are going with 50a, will be a little more.  50 amp breaker is about $7.  At risk of stating the obvious, http://www.homedepot.com has pricing information.   Check your local electrical code.  In my county, everything has to be run in metal conduit, which adds expense and time.__David Hillman
Reply:the garage is attached to the house, not of the other wires from the box to the garage are in metal conduit.will there be any ill affects to running 6 gauge wire with a 60a breaker?

Reply:As someone simply said, exposed wire has to be in conduit.    Now unless you live in a county that requires solid metal conduit( Like Chicago and surrounding  'burbs like Dan - the building codes there don't even allow BX or armored cable), you can use plastic conduit, either the blue stuff, commonly called smurf tube, or the gray PVC conduit.    I've used the gray PVC conduit for my welders, since it's somewhat easier to use, and just like the plumbing PVC pipe.   Lots of fittings, connectors and boxes to use for the average Home DIYer.   Uses the same PVC adhesive cement.  However, the metal conduit isn't difficult either, and in someways is cheaper too.   The expensive part of thin-wall metal conduit is some of the tools such as a bender, fishtape(cable puller) and if you choose to use crimp connectors, but they also have screw type connectors too - and if short enough and planned right you don't even need a fishtape. You could probably easily run 8AWG 3 conductor in 1/2 inch thinwall (EMT)- 4 might be tight?   Look and see, 3/4 EMT isn't much more expensive. You can save a few bucks if you buy just the 3 conductors - a separate wire for each, 1 black, one red and one white - you might want to add a bare wire ground, which is what you would get if you bought 8-3 AWG with ground.   While many welders don't have a fourth wire, you might find something later requiring it.   Electric clothes dryers are good examples of this - the original installations from several years ago were acceptable with 3 wire setups, but now require a 4 wire, with the fourth wire being the ground.

Reply:ummm...the ampacity chart that I just looked at ( http://www.cerrowire.com/default.aspx?id=46 ) lists #6 wire at 55 amps...
Reply:I would use the #6 even if its overkill now. You might want to get a bigger welder or you could put in a sub panel. No sense putting in something marginal.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:Welds4d, Um, a few (twenty?) feet of 6/3 is fine under NEC to run a welder that draws 100A, assuming a 60% DC. Um. Welding machines are "different" in the NEC because they are not constant loads.EDIT: I have not read entire thread but if the OP is talking about laying in new wire to power a shop, YES ADD GOOD HEAVY WIRE, even more ampacity than you expect to need, because YOU WILL USE IT and if not, the next owner of your place will thank you and bless you for putting it in!Last edited by Kelvin; 05-10-2011 at 08:34 PM.
Reply:kelvin, been a couple ideas floating around in this Thread- when you give out advice ya gotta CLARIFY EXACTLY what you are talking aboutWelder Circuit- yes smaller wire ok with Bigger CB see Art 630 NECNormal use Circuit or Sub Panel- CB Gotta match the wire as well as the length of the run.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Where I live, attached garages with living quarters overhead are required to be fully drywalled.  If the original poster does not want to work with the drywall, EMT (thin wall conduit) on the surface is an option.  Pros-  Exposed and minimal damage to the drywall  Cons- Industrial look, dust catcher.Original poster would be well served by a consultation with an electrician.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressori will post pictures of exactly what i am working with. the garage does have drywall. i am just starting reading a book on house eletricity, which i know nothing about. so i will learn some of the peoper terms.i do later want to upgrade to a larget tig machine. possable a full sized compressor. so running a cable size line is not a issue.excuse my mess, alot of stuff was thrown around because i was in the process of rearranging everything.
Reply:there are 110 recepticles in the wall and and the celing. there are 2 110v outlets in the celings that the dual garage door openers are plugged into.all the wire in the house running from the braker panel to the garage looks like this wire, and is stapled to the wood beams in the basement with plastic fastenersmuch like these, obviously not as many, but in the same fashionno wires are ran into any type of tubing. i will ask a few of the neighbors how theirs are ran. i dont want to raise any flags with the town just yet.as far as running the wire the box is prob about 25 feet if that from the wall running to the garage. so i prob will only have to go 25 over and a foot up if that.in this pic (not mine) i see some wire are ran out and the open, and one particula wire is in some shielding/blue tube. if i do have to use the tubing, will it have to run all the way to the braker box?
Reply:just testing if this post for reference of different types of wire
