Reply:You can take pieces of things like metal or plastic or wood and turn them into smaller pieces and chips.  Lots and lots of chips.  Not UK 'chips' (aka french-fries) but small pieces of material removed from the bigger pieces of material mounted in the machine. You can make your bank account/wallet lighter/thinner/empty getting tooling and accessories for them. You can make most anything with a lathe and a mill.  Drill presses are handy for 'lighter' duty hole-making than a mill (all else being relatively equal, a tiny mill may not be as sturdy as a big industrial drill press, etc).  The shaper is a bit more specialized, but still handy. With a lathe and a mill, you could make more lathes and mills. You can make gears, and shafts for the gears to run on, and pulleys, and precision brackets, and pretty much anything you can jig/fixture/mount and then remove material in the place(s) you want to.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Not trying to hijack the thread but, on  the same subject here, what books/DVDs do you all recommend one buy to learn how to use a milling/lathe machine?I would like to get one one day but don't have a clue on how to use one correctly or what they are fully capable of doing.Any recommendations on getting started? Thanks for your thoughts.

Reply:Has anyone ever tried to set a world record of building a model of a ?? by running 8 (manual) machines all at the same time?I have a friend who used an old shaper while building some copies of an early (1905?) Wright Flier engine; he said they're still great for some operations. He/they had to recreate the plans from multiple sources, and found that no two early engines were exactly the same. That is a hint; I can give him your address if you need to build a Wright Flyer.....
Reply:my dad is a clockmaker and has offered to teach me to use all these machines, he has plenty of tooling as its a fully operational workshop in his garage. He has offered to teach me the clock repairs but I wondered if it was easy to get other machine work? I forgot to add I have a arc welder and a mig, but need a new liner for my mig. I havent had much practice with either.thanks for the replies so far guys.James
Reply:Don't tell too many people, or you'll have lot's of "friends", no time and no rewards!I'd be happy with one lathe or one mill limited use for a shaper but they are handy."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:For starters, don't brag about what you have or don't.  If you can't use it, nobody cares unless you're selling it!If your old man is offering to teach you how to use them, then damn well learn how to use them!  At that, listen to everything he has to say!  If he wants to educate you about repairing clocks, clock repair requires a lot of precision.  Even if you don't want to repair clocks for a living, it would teach hardcore accuracy in your measurements.Being that it's your dad, I'd suggest that you learn from him whatever you can.My old man and I have worked on some projects together.  He wanted a solar panel holder for his shed, so we went into the garage and built it!  He doesn't have a background in welding, but it was a good time!  We didn't work from a drawing, more or less it was built off the solar panel, but the end result looked great (He was happy!)The time spent was even better!Just my two cents!
