I just bought a used miller 180 tig recently and am practicing now.  I've done some mig welding and this one is obviously different.  I was trying to weld some 1/4" rect. tubing and found out that the recommended amps are a little low.So, my question is that I'm welding or thinking about welding some shackles up to a 10" c channel.  The shackles are ~ 3/4" x1" and the c channel is 1/4".  Will this tig be enough or should I take it somewhere to have it done? Also, if I am not at the end of this tig welders guildlines, how high should I set it up for considering this situation?
Reply:unfortunately with 180amps you cant get FULL penetration on .25" (1 amp for every .001" of material thickness is the guideline ive been hearing).how much stress will this need to accomodate, whats it going to be used for? a good V on the c channel may be enough to accomplish what you need IF its not a vital weld. maybe (likely) someone else will correct me if im missing somthing. i have to add that ive never tried tig, and threre may be some process specifics that im missing
Reply:For stuff that thick, I would just stick weld it.
Reply:I'm with Joe, break out the stick.I r 2 a perfessional
