Understanding Puddle Control

With MIG, TIG, and stick the key to welding is understanding puddle control. The goal is to fuse the base metal together. The trick is to get good fusion and quality (strength) and appearance. The arc gouges the base metal; the welder adds filler, travel speed and gun - torch - rod angle fill the puddle.Imagine pouring a glass of water on the wall. Where does the water go?Down, because of gravity. What three conditions will make the water fuse to the wall?Weldtek

Reply:puddle control...hmmmmm either it controls you or you control it...hard to explane better to show..and the show is coming.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Hey TEK! You're all over it, excellent! Cohesion, adhesion and surface tension.So, water on the wall!   Freeze the wall. What determines what happens now. 1. Temperature of the wall.2. Temperature of the water.3. Pouring rate.Welding out of position, like vertical, requires an understanding of the welding process, certain laws of physics and  "puddle control!" When the puddle rolls out and down the wall, it's nothing more than you just put ten ounces of water in an eight ounce glass.Weldtek

Reply:Yeah. Cohesion is the water molecules sticking to each other. Adhesion is the droplet sticking to the glass. Surface tension is the dome shape of the droplet.Weldtek

Reply:Hey, teknition, I forgot all about that one. That shape is called a meniscus, for those technically oriented folk (like me). Like I said before, that technical crap might be boring everybody; but when ya can't get it to stick together, ya start asking why?Weldtek
