So I'm going to be in the market for a truck and so I don't have to buy 2 do you have to have a dually for a rig?. The payload capacity is the same in a regular f350 right. Could I get away with a 250?I know it sounds like a dumb question but all the rig welders here run duallies and I was just wondering why specifically
Reply:by the time you get your machine and tools on there, you'll want a dually.  My rig weighs 11,500lbs, and its only a 2wd.  At the very least you 'll want a F-250, but a 1 ton will allow you to haul alot of materials as well as the tools you need.  A single wheel F-350 has about a thousand pound lighter payload capacity, but if you plan on loading down your rig and then wanting to pull a trailer, you'll want the dually. In the field: '06 Ram 3500/Miller PP350    '14 F-350/Lincoln Classic 300DIn the shop: MM252, Hypertherm PM-85, White face MM200
Reply:a guy i used to work for had an f250 with an 8ft bed with a miller bobcat small gas bottels and tool box and it was fine but when we moved larger pices of steel we would use the dully with a redding bed on it. however the dulley has the F350 4X4 has a GVRW of 12200 and the singal  F350 4X4 is 9900 GVRW. the F250 has a 9400 GVRW so its really how much waight you needWELD TO LIVE LIVE TO RIDEA bad welder blames his equipment, a good weldor can lay a perfect bead on any thing
Reply:Ford lists the chasis cab SRW F350 as having a GVWR of 11500lbs, and the DRW F350 GVWR of 13000. Listed at the very bottom. The F250 is probably around 9K or so GVWR.http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/g...ab_Catalog.pdfA lot of that extra capasity comes from the fact you can spread the load over more rubber and stay within the ratings for the tires. Also the wider rear wheels helps stabilize high center of gravity loads..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:do the math, whats the weight of all your gear ?
Reply:Even if you put a Big Blue airpack Miller in the box of your pick up. You're only 2000 pounds, way under GVRD of a 1 tonne single axle. It all depends how much more weight you'll have to carry.
Reply:Don't get caught up in the hype of a dually. IMO a srw axle 250, 350 is plenty.I had an SA 200, & trailblazer w/ my 5' jobox in the bed with three people upThere standing and it didn't squat too much. And still rode great.I got a dodge 2500 4x4 and it carries everything I need.If you got the money DRW is nice though. I'd suggest 4x4 as a more important need!1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together
Reply:Tozzi carries everything in a F-350 pickup...No dually needed....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:another consideration is lets say you got 3000 pounds on the back of your truck and youre going down the highway at 75mph, which would you rather experience a blowout in? Dually or single?
Reply:new ta posting but had to put my 2 cents in as i use the snot out of my f350s and single verses deul wheel huge diffference i was rolling down 65 in al. with trailer 16' at 75mph with 1500lbs on 1500lb trailer 3000lbs total decided to start waging the tail behind me i did not realy feal it look back and it was wipping 3ft ta either side but as i say that 4 door kept strait big difference if ya plan to ever pull trailer with metal ,,here is pic othat truck by the way loaded ta gills 18mpg 7.3 diesel Attached Images
Reply:Thanks for all the info.I don't have any set up yet and probably wont for a while but I need a new work truck til I'm ready for a rig setup. I just don't want to buy twice. I'd like a srw f350 crew cab short bed. But a dually would seem a little more reliable and safer. I've got a little while to decide. Thanks
Reply:And yes 4x4 is a must. I was on a job in Wyoming and it was so muddy and slick everyone kept sliding around hitting each other. Plus the mud was so bad that 2wd rigs never got anywhere. 4x4 is king. Plus there was a clean *** Dodge 2500 with some mud swampers that would give anyone wood.lol
Reply:[The most obvious downsides are more fuel consumption, more expense in tires (19.5"), and higher registration fees b/c of the GVW.
Reply:Yeah I'm leaning toward srw with nice size rim tire
Reply:just wandering whats hirail 19.5 that ya talkn about what are they come on factory???

Reply:I have a F-250 I lug all my ironworking tools and my big lincoln commander 300 in.  I will say this, that F-250 is crying all the time.  Its sways even with load handlers in it.   I will be replacing it with a F-450 shortly.  Its all I had when I started out.  The plan was to get a ranger 305 at 800lbs vs commander 300 at 1500lbs.  I would go for a F-350 dually at a minimum.  My reason for a F-450 is for the 19.5 tires and brakes that are twice the size.  My buddys F-450 with the same tools and welder can damn near slam your head into the windshield in a panic stop due to the braking power vs a F-350/250Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:If your serious about building a rig yes, its a safety factor.     IF you have ever blown a rear tire on a SRW pickup you would know you should buy a DRW.    Especially since your already talking about overloading the ratings of the truck to begin with.    now the difference between an SRW F-250 and F-350 are almost none.   to the point that they share the same part number for leaf springs. At the end of the day its all about lawyers.   If something happens to your rig and you injure someone else im the vultures will find out and take everything you own.all rigged up and rolling my 93 F-superduty (F-450) is over 13,000 lbs.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Very true good point. Thanks for the input
Reply:I have a Dodge 2500 single wheel, with my Miller Big Blue 502 mounted on its skid with basic tools and bottles the truck is at its limit. I have since went to a dedicated service trailer. That work's for me but I don't chase pipe line. Reply:Both of my 1 ton trucks are singles mostly because that is how they were configured when I bought them Seriously though, a duallie adds 50% to your tire expenses - think about that before you spring for the setup.  It may give you an extra thousand lbs or so capacity, but do you need it?  I find that the F-350 with singles that are properly rated (E load range) can handle some serious loads.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

This was the reason we went with a 3500 SRW on our new Dodge, tire cost vs the weight we need to move regularly. Also we could add the 2 extra tires (convert to duallie) if the 19.5" can't handle it. Not to mention the fuel savings turning 2 less tires.

Reply:I have all my stuff on my F-350 SRW, and it carries it fine. Next rig will be a dually, I want the width. I wont be doing an F-350 this time probably a 2 ton truck F600 or so, bigger brakes, bigger frame, bigger rubber, bigger is better.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."I love the 73'-79' Fords, I want another one.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:guy here in town carries an sa200 in a ranger with bottles in the back seat.  Scares hell out of me every time I see him - I have tried to say something to him but ...no speaky english.  I guess it stops ok - i'm sure when he slams on the brakes the frame bows enough to act like an anchor...lmaojust dont be that guy and you'll be golden. When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.
Reply:I would say no, but thats me. I dont need a lot of the stuff guys like Tozzi, Xtreme do. We do container repairs. This is typically how my trucks are all set up.  Chevy 2500 2X4. It handles good, I have had blowouts on the rear and got it off the road fine. Just drive like you have some sense.Truck carries miller bobcat, tanks, all cords, lines, tools you will ever need. Reply:I'm supplied with a 01 chevy 2500HD 2wd. It has helper springs and handles the weight just fine, however it will sink frame deep if  you get into anything soft. If it were 4wd it would help alot. I personally would not have a single rear wheel 2wd for a work truck.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:Two extra rear wheels are a trivial expense. If they are actually wearing out that means the truck is making plenty of money.
Reply:I'm pretty sure a f250 would handle my needs. I don't pull trailors so I'm not too worried about that and yes 4x4 definately
