What is really the diff. between the transfomer/coil TIG and the inverter TIG as far as the functional part? Besides weight.Does one last longer?  Easier to use?  Make a better weld?  Make a better weldor?
Reply:thats easy.. The Operator...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Inverter-cased units will have significantly less power draw, as well as a much greater range of arc quality adjustments.  They are more critically dependent on more vulnerable electronics, though they still have an excellent track record and warranty.
Reply:like mac said, it really comes down to power draw and arc control. the transformers are only a hurts as thats what comes out of the wall where the inverters can go as high as 250 hurts, this will allow for a much more focused arc. thus the pointed tungsten instead of the balled. you also generally get a wider pulse range with the inverters. and last but not least is the amperage draw. good example would be the syncrowave 180 requires a 60 amp circuit and breaker to produce the 180 amp weld output wile the TA-185 (inverter) will give you a 185 amp output with only a 30 amp circuit and breaker.both will make great welds in capable hands, nether will make great welds if you don't have a clue. as far as easy to use, you don't have to use all the options given on the inverter just because they are there, i still have not used the pulse on mine and I'm shore there are other things i just have not needed to use. this being my first TIG unit i have not found it too complicated to use and have created some very nice welds on steel, SS, and aluminum with it. for the $$$ its hard to beat the TA-185. i love minei do not have the power available to run a transformer in my shop so an inverter was the only hope of me getting to TIG in my shop. the inverters also run a great bead in stick. Attached Images summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:Transformers are limited to 120hz when welding on AC.  They will not pulse like the inverters will.  Also, they will be a lot more limited on AC balance adjustment.
Reply:as i understood it the transformers wre limited to the 60hz that comes out of the wall, how do they get 120hz ?? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:I run both side by side in my shop- we have a syncrowave 250, and a 304xmt. For tig welding mild or stainless, we use whichever one is closer, or free at the time. The tig welds are similar from both, but I would have to say, on the same day, with the same metal, with the same amount of caffeine and sleep, I prefer welding with the inverter. It just seems a bit more controllable, and the welds turn out a bit better. Its quieter, too, as the fan only comes on on demand, and you have to be running it at something like 75% duty cycle for that to happen. Plus, as mentioned, it uses less amps, and its lighter and easier to move. The big plus is if you are using it for more than just tig- my 304 will also do stick and mig- and for both, I like it a lot better than my old transformer welders- I still have a Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC stick welder, and a stick stinger on my Syncrowave- but the inverter will run much nicer welds with any rod than either. I also have an old Regency transformer power supply with a mig wire feeder on it- and if you put the same feeder on the inverter, the mig weld is instantly, noticeably better. So I am a fan of inverters. Especially since I have had to carry em around on jobsites- try that with an old syncrowave.
Reply:Originally Posted by Scott V 2I thought it would be sixty? So if you put set a inverter at 60HZ per second you are really at 120 hz on ac? So you are count both halves of the wave as separate HZ.
Reply:I could be wrong, but I think it is fairly simple to get a higher frequency from a transformer machine. My econotig has HF start. I think it is done with a coupling coil driven by a transistor.
Reply:the standard transformer puts out the same 60Hz that it gets from the wall.the inverters throw in a hole bunch of extra electronics allowing for more hz and a host of other additional control options. the HF starts is a different animal all together.stick with the TA-185 get your credit card out and call IOC, 3 days later you will be playing with your new toy and all will be good. never look back or question it and you will be happy for a long time. i have been watching the TA-185 on several welding forums for over 3 years now. i was first going to get a dyn200 but after saving and having to spend it on family things then saving again 2 months ago i got the TA-185. i watched as many many people got the TA-185 and watched for any problems that they had to report after having it for a wile, as well as how they liked it. with every one being happy with the TA-185, and little to no problems reported over the 3+ years i spent saving for the dyn200 i decided it was best to save the extra $$ and just get the TA as it had a good track record and i was still no where near the $3000.00 needed for the dyn. so i called up IOC got me new TIG (TA-185) and was all happy. 1 1/2 months later the new model came out. it never bothered me i had the old model as the new one just added more controls i would never use any way, so never look back just be happy with it i say. after all the new model would have set me back an extra $250.00 for a few extra controls i would never use, so i think i did better by getting the old model for $1700.00 instead of the new one for $1900.00 so all is good. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
