I am new to this and am learning plug welding with my new MIG. This forum has been VERY HELPFUL, thanks to everybody. My problem is visibility in my garage, it is very hard to see the edge of the hole to weld. However while practicing on some scrap metal in direct sunlight, I could see fairly well. Are there any very bright worklights that will have the same effect as the sun ? 500w halogen doesn't cut it. Thanks again.Rich
Reply:How does a 500W halogen not cut it?  That's darn bright.  And it's what I use.
Reply:That blue light, the one you get when you pull the trigger, that ones pretty bright.   And hey, welcome to the cage!
Reply:light?i don't need no stinking light...   ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:i do not understand why you would think a 500W hal. is not a good idea, HF even makes one on a retractable mount that swings back against the wall when not in use. it is about the best option out. only other would be a 150W in a drop cord light. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:you said you couldn't see inside the shop, is that shield up or down. i take it you meant shield down, since you said you welded some scrap outside ad could see fine. may want to change shades on your hood."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Flip your helmet up, aim the gun at the hole, steady it with ur other hand , nod your head to flip the helmet down then squeeze the trigger. As soon as the arc starts you can see the hole and finish the weld.If you cant see the hole with the arc going then try a lighter shade of lens as has already been suggested.Either of these situations is where a good auto darkening helmet really shines. You will be able to see before you start the arc without tipping your helmet up all the time, and the better auto helmets have variable shading so you can set it as required.
Reply:I forgot to add....stop light from overhead lights etc. from entering the back of your helmet as this can also make it difficult to see. Try to position yourself and the item to be welded so that light doesn't enter the back of your helmet and reflect back in your eyes.
Reply:reflection from a light color shirt can not only make it harder to see but cause a eye isue also. my miller BWE (big windo eleat) made a big difference in visibility, it is however an expensive option but well werth every $ summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Good points, Teknition and James.  Keep the light from behind your hood.  And I rivetted a scrap piece of leather to the bottom of my hood, just like the ones you can buy.  This keeps more stray light from relecting up my shirt.
