Back in March I built a bench-top mini-press/brake with some angle, rectangular tubing, and a common 6 ton bottle jack. This was originally pictured in thread "mini brake plans" by Ross H: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=18889 Ross H had a nice plan, I just did mine a little different.I promised myself when I built it that I was going to paint it orange and call it the Orange Crush. This promise to myself has finally come to fruition and is pictured below. I sprayed the white "Cruch" through a template made with an exacto-knife. The word "ORANGE" and the green and orange components of the lettering was done free-hand.Don't go making to many comments about the weld showing in the second photo where there is a ring cut from 3/4" pipe welded on to center the jack pad. I was just getting started and was still dropping pigeon poo. -Mondo Attached ImagesLast edited by Mondo; 11-08-2008 at 10:53 PM.Reason: technical revision 1.1Member, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Looks like somthing I've been wanting to build! Can you post more pics with details and show how it works? I have a spare jack and would like to try building one similiar. The springs look familiar - just like those off a trampoline that blew into my pasture during the last storm.
Reply:What did you use for the anvil, edge, whatever the damn thing's called, that folds the metal into the die, or whatever THAT damn thing's called? Brain lock"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I really like that paint job. But, with it being that purty I'd have to grind out and reweld that ring. Sorry, but it would have to be done.
Reply:I don't have any better pics, but I can offer the details of construction:Dimensions 24" x 24 " including the width of the "feet". So it is 20" accross the top and 24 " tall. Uprights are 2 x 3/6 angle, "feet" are 2 x 1/8 angle. Cross bars are 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 x .25 rectangular tubing I used three: Top, bottom "anvil" and middle under the jack. Frame bolts are 3/8 SAE grade 8. The pins supporting the anvil are 5/8 SAE Grade 8The jack is an off-the-shelf 6 ton bottle found at local VIP auto parts store. The springs I found at the local ACE hardware... 6" x 1" and take a good pull to stretch 'em.I made up a bending die from 1/4" angle iron and 1/4 flat bar. It will bend 9 gauge sheet steel up to 12" wide to a crisp 90°. 1/4" plate up to 4.7 inches wide. I use a reference chart at this tool site as a guide:http://www.americanmachinetools.com/pressure_table.htmIf I pump up the jack against the anvil to maximum pressue the top bar starts to bend. It has taken a slight "set" which is visible if viewed from the end. No doubt this is pushing the limits of the material I used to build it. I certainly wouldn't make it any wider or use a more powerful jack without using heavier steel or reinforcing the tubing on both sides.- MondoLast edited by Mondo; 11-08-2008 at 11:27 PM.Reason: Technical Revision 1.2Member, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
