I have a 1987 Ford pick up truck. I removed the transmission to replace the flywheel. As i removed the transmission, i discovered that the top of the transmission housing had broken off. The brake is where the top two bolts of the transmission housing mounts to the engine.I think the transmission housing is cast aluminum. I think the transmission housing has been broke for a while because the crack is very dirty. The transmission housing is about 3/16 thick. I have a Lincoln tombstone AC/DC stick welder and a Lincoln mig welder. My question is can this be weld?[/B] If it can be weld, what kind of rods do i need? Im not a trained welder be I weld on my farm equipment and it has held up for several years.attached is a pic of the broken piece Attached Images
Reply:People do it all the time but my preferred method is to TIG it. If you have no experience with it, you would probably be best to leave it to someone else who has had experience with this kind of fix. Not saying you couldnt do it yourself, just I believe a fix like this would be easiest if you just take it to someone with the experience and the equipment to do it correctly
Reply:I would have it tigged..Take the tranny to someone that can do it and it will be ok..In all reality that has " not been doing anything" for a long time..It was broken many moons ago and if you did not need to remove the trans how much longer would it last?I think forever. Now the can of worms has been opened it's best to bring it to someone and for less than 75$ it will be better than new.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Just get some JB Weld. HEH! the trick is getting the parts really clean. porous aluminium just absorbs oil and grease. If you do it yourself then try and add some reinforcements strips too if room allows. for all the time and effort did you price out a junkyard bellhousing? should be pretty cheap and easy to find for that truckTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.
