Not sure if this is the right section or not, how do you guys store your 4 1/2" angle grinders in the shop? I searched but dont come up with anything. I was thinking about making a bracket from 1/8x1 1/2 " flat (the grinders seem to hang on that fine) and screwing a couple to the wall, or making a square "carasoul" with same material around the edge so I could hang 2 grinders from each side? I could put it on a piece of 1 1/2 pipe with legs and wheels so i wouldnt use up wall space. Any ideas? thanks, Craig
Reply:In a pile. There have been a couple of nice grinder racks posted up from time to time, some as part of welding tables. Mine usually end up in a drawer or piled on the bench as I swap from grinder to grinder rather than change disks..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've ended up using the edge of one of my shelves, where the side rail extends above the board, and like you say, they seem to hang just fine by the guards. I loop the cord up around them so that the plug and the whole cord is visible easily - I like being able to verify that it is not only off, but unplugged. I have ten fingers and want to keep them! (except for the pinky finger on my right hand - he's a jerk)
Reply:Plastic tool box. All the discs, wheels, extra cord, soapstone, gloves, tempil sticks, and any other crap I need goes in too.
Reply:All my wheels, shields, wrenches, and stuff are on a flat plate I made to fit in the drawer of my tool box with 3/8" posts sticking up. Each post holds separated disks, like one has all stones on it, the next all one style flexible disks, the next has polishing and buffing pads, etc. I have kitchen cabinets in my shop which I pretty much just pile in my electric tools.I would like to have a more organized system but am kind of limited on room and wall space.
Reply:I'm with DSW on this. Mine are in a pile on my welding table. However the best setup I ever heard of was a guy who kept his hanging on the inside of a piece of large pipe. The cord went down into the pipe and he hung the grinder on the lip. I've always thought about doing that but I really don't have a good place to put the pipe.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:We used plain angle iron at work to store all sizes. Stiffer than flat, but either is fine.
Reply:yea farmall, if I used 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 the grinders would hang from the guards, and I could just weld tabs to screw them to the wall if I go the wall mount route, thanks
Reply:I wrap the cord around the grinder and it goes in the bucket(metal bucket, not a plastic pail) with the chipping hammer, wire brush, file, rods, and other essentials. The others(4 1/2") stay in there cases in the gang box, the big 9" hangs off the shelf in the box, pencil grinder in the gang box, air grinders, in there own box with burrs and all there stuff.Last edited by TozziWelding; 05-19-2011 at 07:49 AM.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Darn this thread corrupted me. I got in the shop this morning and looked at the pile of grinders on the table and decided enough is enough. Reply:I am planning out how to make a rolling "tree" to hold all the grinders, wrenches and discs. I plan on having an upright pipe about 4' -5' tall and about 5-6" in diameter. Welded pegs will hold the grinders and other stuff. The base will sit low slung to the floor and wide, with the wheels rising up higher than the base of the pipe, kind of like those rolling things they have at the hospital that hold the IV bags. Then I can just roll it right up to where I am working and grab what I need. I like a lot of grinders on hand so I don't have to swap wheels while I'm working. The only drawback is it will only roll around on a smooth floor, not for outside work. But that won't be a problem as soon as my garage is finished! 1,000 square feet, just got the permit last Friday!Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:I use 1/4" round stock bent in a V then with like 3" straight ends so i can mount to bottom of welding table or a portable stand just make sure you put it far enough under table that when you weld sparks dond drop directly on the grinders Attached ImagesLincoln Pro Core 125Lincolin sp 100Miller Big 40Lincoln Idealarc SP250miller matic 212http://www.facebook.com/hdwelding?sk=wallwww.hdweldingbeds.com

Reply:Jack, my "racks" will be similar, they will be 1/8 by 1 1/2 angle that will bolt to the wall, I think.......nice shop!
Reply:Craig, mine is similar to Jack's. 1"x1/8" welded under the front edge of my welding table. I bent the ends in about 4" and welded it to the under side of the top at these points, plus added some support spacers in between for support. I hang grinders, clamps, hammers, bendy bars from it. Keeps them right there when you need them. Don't have to step away from the table and search. Even have little coils to hold the MIG gun.I've got a pic but need to figure out my google account album thing to up load it. 200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I'm not actually sure how many 4-1/2" angle grinders I have. I know there is one with a cup brush on it in one cart (a DeWalt I think), a Bosch in my chop saw cart, there's a couple with plain grinding disks on them on the "I don't know where else to put it" cart and I am reasonably confident that there are two more here someplace......I guess I don't have a good storage solution, in part because I always wind up needing them when they aren't where I am.Tom Hintz, publisherwww.newmetalworker.comLincoln Pro Mig 180Lincoln AC 255Determination

Reply:one of these days ill get around to taking some pics in the shop, a couple 4x2 sheets of expanded metal on 1x1 square tubing frames - add tooo many S hooks, bits of cable, bailing wire, a few long bolts sticking out here and there.... started out to be a nice neat pseudo peg-board of toolsthe best laid plans....When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.
