Newport news ship building

I went past the ship yard in Newport news Saturday and saw that theres a Destroyer being built for the US Navy. I was wondering if anyone on here worked there and was working on that project. Seemed like it would be quite a job and an honor to take part in something of that magnitude.

Reply:Poster Wheelchair used to work at NN.My son worked there as a naval architect right out of college.  Spent 3+ years there and was very happy with the advancement, but moved on to greener pastures.Surprised to hear they're working on a destroyer.  Their specialty was subs and aircraft carriers.  They just landed another contract for another aircraft carrier so they'll be busy for at least the next three years.My son was the Naval Architect that did the sea trials on the Truman when she was launched.  Had an opportunity to go on the trials, but was out of the country when they were conducted.  Without giving up any "sensitive" data, I'll just say that some of her design specs are flat out mind boggling.  One that jumped out at me was the fact that during trials she's "backed down" (operated in reverse) at full power for 23 miles.  Hard to imagine the stresses placed on the running gear in such a maneuver.The Apprentice School, operated by NN is one of the best shipbuilding prep centers in the world.  A former president of the yard, Pat Phillips, is a good friend of mine and was a graduate of the Apprentice School.  Only president on record to have worked his way up thru the ranks.Oh, and BTW, NN is hiring.  They pay a "more than competitive wage" for this area.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Well now im all confused. I was thinking aircraft carrier when i put destroyer, but after looking at some pictures in not sure its either. It definitely has to be a US Naval ship, the tower on it was huge.
Reply:We dont build destroyers, just carriers and subs but theres nothing in the water or dry dock that would resemble much of either at the moment but the roosevelt is on the south end for overhaul.Pays not bad for my being a new guy and they are paying heavily for my training and the benefits arent bad either.  Im curious though as to what one considers bad pay seeing as there are some welders out in the yard who are making 6 figures.
