I'm looking at getting a 120v welder and have narrowed it down to the MM135 or the Hobart Handler 140. I don't really have access to 220v so that is out of the question. I've been reading up about them and they seem very similar. My question is on these smaller machines is the infinte voltage control and the different gun worth the extra $$$. I've been through 3 welding classes @ a votech but have been spoiled using brand new millers with 480v. Money is not a real issue between the 2 but I wanna make sure the extra spent is worth it. Thanks in adavance
Reply:Essentially, the Hobart is a re-branded Miller which is marketed for other than the industrial community. So, you are basically buying the same machine. You could also consider a Clarke unit and possibly save a few hundred. I have one for light work and transporting and they are great machines with a even GREATER warranty and the same great customer service. Northertool has them in stock and most times you can get free shipping. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...1005_200311005^ This unit comes with a cart and other accessories, a great buy IMO. They also sell it seperately for $349.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:If money isn't all that tight, would getting a 240V circuit be a possibility? Also consider the Millermatic Passport.  Definitely the most capable 120V unit out there when it comes to MIG welding. The HH140 and the MM135 are different, though.  The HH140 is a much newer design with a better low-end arc for sheet metal (compared to the previous HH135) and it really does output another 5A at the top end.  It has a tapped transformer v. a variable voltage control on the MM135, which honestly isn't that big a deal on this class of machine.
Reply:220 is basically out of the question the passport is a little out of my price range. I would like to get the passport but @ $1500 that is a little pricey. What I seems to be getting is that the HH140 might be the better buy even though it doesn't have the infinite control. I thought that it would help with the thicker 3/16 stuff that I would be workin with alot but the 5 extra amps may help more. Keep it coming please
