It's been 12-13 years since I've owned a cutting torch or worked with one. Just now have gotten back into hobby welding and found myself in need of a torch set up. I priced a lot of this stuff and was amazed at how crazy expensive everything was. In need of one though and not having the cash on hand, I approached one of our local welding suppliers in town and struck up a deal with him. I traded a new in the box AR-15 even for a complete rig, included a Victor professional Journeyman torch kit with edge regulators, a 50' hose package along with the 20' that came in the kit, a Forney triple flint striker, 1 each full oxygen & acetylene bottles, bottle cart, tinted face shield and a pair of heavy elbow length gloves. As I understand, the new Edge regulators have built in, replaceable reverse flow check valves and flashback arrestors. From being out of touch for so long, are there any safety concerns I should re-familiarize myself with other than the obvious, common sense ones ?
Reply:The one thing that comes to mind, after seeing that a "tinted face shield" is provided, is whether or not you plan on wearing additional eye protection. You should definitely wear a close fitting pair of safety glasses under that face shield.Just my$.02 worth.Bgbkwndo.
Reply:Great info !!!!!! Will definitely pick a pair of those up tomorrow ...... Way cheaper than trying to find a used eye or two on the black market.....
Reply:Rico, just to refresh your memory, acetalyne (sp) should not be used at pressures in excess of 15 PSI or withdrawn at greater than 10% of the bottles capacity at a time to avoid sucking solvent into the regulator and torch. Common stuff but if it has been a while a good thing or two to be reminded of to prevent issues later... Good luck and welcome back!BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys? Trade?
Reply:Bob, I remembered there were some pressures involved, was not for sure what they were.... Thanks for that info !!!!! I'm going to bed early tonight with the manual to go cover to cover and was hoping that info was in there so I'd know the numbers...... Thanks again !!!!!
Reply:That Journeyman size torch is very large for a hobby welder at home.A Victor Performer size torch would do everything you will need.As far as the safety check valves, I seriously doubt they are built into the regulator. You would need the check valves to protect your hoses. In fact the web page for "edge" Victor regulators says NO."no downstream devices"Last edited by Donald Branscom; 05-26-2011 at 11:12 AM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
