Posted this in another forum but figured I'd try here too. Does anybody have any information about Link-Arc welders? Specifically an AJ 200? See photos below. I inherited this from my father when he passed away. link-arc1 by apexpredator65, on Flickrlink-ark3 by apexpredator65, on Flickrlink-arc2 by apexpredator65, on Flickr
Reply:I couldn't find any information on it,but it looks like a dandy machine in pretty good shape. What information is in the decal located at the top center of the front ?Judging by it's size (how heavy is it?) I'd be inclined to think it's an alternator welder. Have you looked inside the cover to see if it has a large alternator power source? If it has a conventional generator inside it should be much heaver than if it uses an alternator as it's power source. A conventional generator unit should be between 300-400 # while an alternator unit would be much lighter. They made several of the alternator units in the 60's-70's under different names... Yours might be one of similar design & limited production. One was an "Apache" which was a clone of another welder that ceased production. I think Lincoln even built one at some point. Besides belonging to your Dad... I'd appreciate its compact size as well as its condition and 200A DC output. It's similar to my Lincoln 225 w/Onan power though it appears smaller in size (which ain't a bad thing). New info----I kept searching and found this comment about the "Link Arc" ****I have rigged up an alternator welder using an old "Link Arc" belt driven unit. The engine is an older Kohler 8HP one lunger. It welds really well, and has 100% duty cycle up to about 140 Amps DC.***All I can say is open the top and determine if it has a belt driven alternator inside the case. I think my assumption about it being an alternator based machine was correct. There is a modern "Link Arc" unit that is designed for underhood installation for offroad vehicles...the company may be the same and just discontinued the stationary unit in favor of the mobile welding units. If I find any info on it I'll add to this. If you find any answers to your posts how about letting us know . I like it and it has a 100% duty cycle too. Good Luck.... I think you found one of my toys.... No info and no idea where to look Last edited by mudbugone; 05-28-2011 at 01:29 AM.
