ive been doing pretty good with my roots , fillers and caps.  I tend to wiggle out my root witha  #6 cup running maybe 100 amps.   When im in 5g i cant seem to get enough metal in there and i know this is just gravity trying to bring me down.  3 and sx o clock are perfect i could not ask for more.  My top usually ends up a bit heavy, but not so much that im incredibly worried about it due to if i putt a good deal of pressure on the filler and just walk or wiggle it alot faster once i hit the1 o clock range it seems to pan out fairley well.  Anyhow my question is just for the bottom.  Anyt times on getting it to look completely uniform?
Reply:Here is what I have done when doing pressure pipe tig tests. If your test instructer says he wants x many tacks and lets say he wants them 1/4" long. I will make all my tacks 1/4" long but one. I will stretch one tack to 1/2" long. Then when I get my piece in the weld position (5G in your case) put that big tack on the bottom. That way your bottom is done in that area. That will help. All the pipe tests I've done were 6G position. If your test instructer doesn't give any specific inscructions on what he wants for tacks, make your one tack 3/4" long and use that for the bottom.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:im thinking about feeding smaller wire through the bevel of the pipe to get a little more reinforcement in the lower parts of the pipe.let you know how that works out for me.G
Reply:All you need to do is to feed more wire. Simple as that. Yes gravity is working against you so it's important to feed that filler.Don't be shy.
Reply:1/8 wire and a loose 1/8 gap, get your heat right and you won't need to worry about feeding wire that fast. Do you ever free hand or do you only walk the cup? I feehand every root regardless of position and once you get the hang of it your speed will improve dramaticaly. It's like evrerything else in welding...practice, practice, practice!
