So for uh, (man I don't even know what day it is) so yeah for a couple weeks now I have been working at a customers facility nearby. Ten or twelve hours a day everday. I am the "lead guy" for second shift. My first go at the lead man thing. I was given three guys from a temp service and lucky for me they are sharp and working out great. We are working on the housing for a steam turbine from a power plant in Lansing, MI I believe. This unit is approximately 60 years old, the steam has eroded the steel and in some place just eaten clean through the housing. So we are building up some areas so that they can be machined and all surfaces in the passages/cavities must be covered in stainless, wether it be weld or the 3/16" 304 sheet we have, it just has to be covered. So we spend hours crawling around in these things filling in spots that are eroded away, repairing washed out welds, fitting stainless sheets to the interior etc....All the filler metal going onto this is stainless, ask me how 309 dual shield wire welds on a 60 or 70 year old cast steel part So here are some pics, if there is any interest I will take some more. The I-beams you see are welded to the housing after it is spread apart about .150"to somewhat compensate for the weld sucking the part in. After we weld it, it goes out for stress relieving, then comes back to be machined, then I sit next to the boring bar/horizontal mill and hope we don't find any slag inclusions when we machine it.If we do, I hop in with the tig and fix it.I don't know how many spools are in the picture, but there were 40 when I left tonight, why they are buying 1/16" wire in 25 lb. spools is beyond me but we gotta do something with them.We are using 1/8" 309 stick rod for places that are hard to reach (been welding looking in a mirror to see the puddle) and for areas were the FCAW just digs too much. The building we are in is just amazing, it is about 110 years old. It is part of the old Allis-Chalmers plant. The beams and even some of the bridge cranes are all built with rivets, they didn't have any new fangled arc welders when the built this place. The ceiling is about five stories up and its about a 1/4 mile from end to end. Alot of history, really amazing place. Attached ImagesYup
