Stainless with a Lincoln AC225

I have a project idea that will require a welded frame, 14" x 12" .     I've got some stainless steel stock that will work.   The material is 304 stainless, 2" wide x .250" thick.      Can I weld this with a Lincoln AC225?If so, what rod type and diameter should I look for?What amp setting should I start at?   Thanks.There are no small projects
Reply:Yes you can easily weld up your 304 stainless with a standard E 308 stainless electrode.  Keep in mind that the rods are expensive just like the stainless material.  1/8th electrode should work around 90 amps AC.  (120 maximum)  The electrical resistance of stainless is higher.  You will notice that the rod will heat up quickly.    Often the last few inches will be red hot by the time you burn down that far.  I have been known to only burn half a rod at a time letting the remainder cool down before using again.  The flux comes off very easily and in fact can pop off by itself as the weld cools.  Wear eye protection at all times and be mindful that the flux will fly off and go down your collar or other good place.  The flux coating is rutile based.  The rod behaves much like a 6013 in terms of striking up and welding.
Reply:I second what he said and actually enjoyed a stainless project I did a couple of years back with a stick welder outside in a parking lot. Reply:I would just like to add something too what has already been said there is more than one type of rod 308L-15 and 308L-16.  The 16 is made to run on ac. I hope this will help, both will work but l6 is a little smoother on ac.
