what does "pushing / pulling" mean?

Ive read a few threads where the person says the "pulled" the bead or "pushed" the bead, can someone explain this to me please. Are you talking about vertical welding, one direction being pulling one being pushing, or is it flat position?  Is there a link on here with terminology that  I could check out? Reply:Push the puddle across the join or pull it, dragging is pulling. Pulling the puddle is like what you do when flat stick welding.
Reply:its the relationship between the angle of the gun,torch,rod(GTR) and the direction of travel. if the GTR is pointed toward the direction you are welding, you are pushing. if its pointed away, you are pulling
