I was wondering who had tried welding with batteries here? I have been researching this as i am of grid and want to be able to do some small welding projects but what im mainly looking into ways to limit the current, or even regulate it.Thx
Reply:A portable generator/welder seems to be the most practical.  Otherwise there are a few battery operated welders out there. Here is one of them:READY WELDER http://brwelder.com/indextemplate.cf...ubCategory=194
Reply:The battery voltages are usually awkward,12v is too low, 24v (about 200A)is sometimes too high.A six and a twelve volt battery might put you in a decent place, about 80A.If you got some long thin leads, there would be a voltage drop.Otherwise you would need a chopper circuit of some sort,IGBT OR MOSFETs .
Reply:Thx for thr reply Lindley. Im probably going to have to build something myself to keep the cost low, i do have most of the parts on hand. Thx
Reply:There are already several posts on the subject - search "welding with batteries"Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Thx all,i have very little success searching most forums including this one, i think its a combo of dial up and a rural server...well mainly dial up....so most of my searches give me nothing including through google. So any links to threads on here would be appreciated.Thx
Reply:Here are two threads on the subject - searched for "welding with car batteries" here on the WeldingWeb - using the search function.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...+car+batterieshttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...+car+batteriesRick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Thx Rick i appreciatte it.A
Reply:Here is a video showing how to do it with three 12volt car batteries hooked in series.  Three batteries is the way to go in my opinion as it puts you closer to the usual stick welding voltage of somewhere around 30 volts. This is not my video, but it pretty much covers everything except I think it should be pointed out to always use a clamp type stinger (which this guy does do) so you can quickly release from the rod if you accidentically stick one.  Welding will not hurt the batteries, but prolonged sticking of a rod would not be good in my opinion if you were using a screw type stinger.
Reply:Thx rr1.
Reply:Interesting idea.  Can control the voltage in 12.8V increments but the amperage is straight gut with no control.  Not sure I would want to do thatGordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Reply:I have seen some sites where people use stainless steel rod to limit current, as it heats up so its resistance goes up. A little experimenting and im sure something very simple can be fabricated that would ,at worst , act like a fuse or limit the current or i guess act like a light bulb.Bike spooks here i comeA

Reply:Lowering voltage may not be such a bad thing in a 36v system, from what i remember Rick said that 36 v was a little to much in his system and from what i have read no one was having a problem striking an arc with 24v or maintaining it. They were probably far more experienced than me but with some experimenting im sure ill figure something out.Im itching to test a few things but im to tired.Later LaterA
