Hello:Yet, another question. I am experimenting with gas welding and cutting. I just recently purchased a gas torch. I cut a few peaces off a crossmember. When I started cutting I was getting isolated pops now I am getting about five pops and the torch cuts off. What am I doing wrong? Is it the setting or the user? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
Reply:You are probably not getting a good seal at all joints of the torch.  Inspect the seats and gaskets closely for scoring or contamination and be sure you are drawing the nuts up firmly.  Do not use a wrench on the tip or mixer nuts unless they have wrench flats, as they are generally not intended to be wrenched tight.  You may damage things using a wrench. If that does not correct the popping and if you are sure you are using the gas pressures at the torch recommended by the manufacturer, take the torch in to a qualified welding equipment repair service or, if it is still in warranty, request a free repair or replacement.  The popping sound is the flame burning back into the torch and is definitely not good for the equipment.awright

Reply:I just recently cut up a chevy c60 to send to a scrap yard. Mike, my buddy who owns the garage, said that the popping was usual with rust metal and getting the torch head too close to the steel. You might try to watch the gap between the torch head and the steel.
Reply:Use the correct tip for the metal thickness.  A #0 should do you right.  Otherwise, you have to turn the gas pressure way down and you get mixed gasses in the tube.  It burns up your torch, too.
Reply:the torch head too close to the steel, is a big cause also make shore the holes in the burn tip are clear and clean. do you get a good flame befor you start the cut? is the popping only when you are cutting?too many pops and you will cook the inside seals and could go all the way back to the tank's, you know whats next right 8^(-)  get it fixed asap summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:well hopefully there are flash suppressors on the line. but i'll agree with the torch head being too close to the metal. usually when i hear lots of pops from someone cutting/welding next to me, there oxygen is a little on the high side too. if your torch settins are proper, you should have nice little blue cones surrounded by the bigger flame, use those cones to set your distance from torch head to cutting surface (should be about 1/4" or so). and rusty metal is a bit harder.
Reply:well hopefully there are flash suppressors on the line, true. most of the newer setups and im pretty shore all the big namer quality sets have them, just the same relying on them is a bad idea, anything can fail, best to stop the popping by finding the cause and fixing it, it is not normal nore is it ok. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:i'll agree with that.
Reply:Make sure cutting tip is tight in cutting head. Also check bevels on back of tip where it seats in head.If it has been dropped, there's a good chance it has a ding on one of the bevels which will cause it to leak causing it to pop.                     MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I found the problem: one of the five holes was clugged. I clean it and the popping sound stopped. As some one suggested, I was cutting too close to the metal. Thanks for the help. Pratice makes perfect. Again, I am moving forward on the project. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2330005
