Im looking into buying a 40's model lincoln 200 just wondering what you think it might be worth. Are they comparable to the shorthoods. It  does supposedly run and arc i havent looked at it yet any input would be helpful.
Reply:Hello kellyv, welcome to the forum. A 40's model Lincoln 200? According to the Lincoln Electric Service Notice # 9301 they started making engine driven welders in 1932. Maybe that means they started full production or started putting serial #'s on them at that time? There is a machine locally that the LWS says was made by Lincoln in 1927. It has a Model T Ford engine driving it. It is still welding. Without a serial # or photos we can't hep you, except to say many of these machines are still welding today. If the machine has been well maintained it is probably worth your time. If not, it will probably cost a lot of time and money to get it back to a dependable machine. It is 70 yrs. old. It will be copper wound & comparable to the shorthood as it is the shorthood's predecessor. Photos would help tremendously.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:If it runs and will hold and arc, then it has "good bones" .     These were the industry standard. - for portable rigs they are still quite common and well liked. Thousands are still running with just basic oil changes and annual engine maintenance and a brush change every few thousand hours.     Just remember the old rule. "never inspect it if you are not willing to replace it".  With a machine that old the basic rule is use and enjoy.  Every part will be worn enough to replace, so someone used to working on new stuff may condemn the whole thing, but someone used to the old machines will just keep the brushes up and the engine running.past work toys; lathes, mills, drills, saws,  robots, lasers ironworker, shears, brake, press, grinders, tensile tester,  torches, tigs, migs, sticks, platten table, positioner,  plasmas , gleeble and spot. Reply:More than that in copper in it. Buy it and tell her later. Just remember the three prices: the price you pay the price you tell her you pay and the price you pay when she finds out the truth.
