You may have seen a pair of my Vise-Grips that broke attempting to do a 'break test' on a weld today in the thread http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=26089.Well, with Vise-Grip moving operations to China there's no way I'm going ot let the good old made in USA versions die easy so here's my TIG repair of the unfortunate pair.Cracked Vise-Grip body.  Gap closed up prior to welding.TIG repair.  First pass was no filler, second pass with to fill in sunken first pass. We'll just have to see if they last another 35 years.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Good fix.Interesting break. Are those the real McCoy?Out of hundreds of genuine Vise-Grip pliers I've seen very few failures; a few brazed jaws pulled and a few stripped adjuster threads. Never noticed a crack like that.

Reply:not to hijack.. but i want to ask about breaking welds...i always clamped or welded my peice down and tried to bust it with a hammer.. i am interested to see you are using a 24 inch wrench.. seems to me a different test, one slow  buildup, one instantaneous impact...just wondering ..

Reply:Nice Job Duane, I'm surprised they lasted that long, sounds like they earn their keep around there. Duane is down there breaking stuff while trying to break other stuff
Reply:i guess  the point is  to stress the area, doesnt matter how, you want to see the metal around the weld  move before the weld breaks...yes?
Reply:Its no wonder we have such high uneployment in our country when all these american companies keep moving their operations oeverseas. Our government ought to tariff the **** out of their products when thay ship them back to us, to take the incentive out of moving. Duane, grind that weld flat and weld a flat gusset 1/8" to help stiffen that fracture, IMHOGood judgement comes from experience.Experience comes from bad judgement.

They do tariff at least the big ticket items and keep the money to theirself, meanwhile the states are left to struggle to make the unemployment payments. Whether or not if products are made over seas the Feds are going to get their money, even if everyone else is hung out to dry.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I would guess they will outlast you.Fixed these in 1970used this welderBoth are 38 yrs old and still going strong Attached ImagesA butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:Good fix.  I have some of those old ones also.  Got the teeth worn down to nothing on a couple of pair.  Guess I'll refile them as the "new" vice grips will be Chinese.
Reply:When the move was announced this past summer, for some reason, the local Lowes put all of them on sale, less than 1/2 off. I bought six pair, four matching & another two to match tthe set I already had, 6 deep-throat clamps.........drum roll please, 34.00 bucks. Went back for morefor a friend, they were sold out.  Bruce The Welding ChefLincoln Weld-Pack 3200 NORWELD StickStanford Hill Farm
