I'm new to this forum and trying to repair a corroded and leaking cast iron boiler (hot water radiator, not steam).Has anyone tried a product called HTS-528 from a company called New Technology Products?http://www.aluminumrepair.com/index.aspThey make rods for both aluminum and cast iron/steel.  The HTS-528 rod can be applied with oxyacetylene at 1400 F, and the claim is that it will bond with corroded and flaking material.Does anyone have any experience with this product or any other helpful information on repairing cast iron?I've just tried a professional epoxy product called Pyro Putty, and the patch held very well, but under pressure water found a way of leaking at the edge of the patch. This boiler runs at 180-200 F with 20-30 lbs. of pressure.  550,000 Btus, and it holds about 120 gallons of water.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Bill, in Warwick, NY
Reply:Well, after reading everything available on this site about cast iron welding, I can see why nobody wants to touch this question with a 10 foot pole.I'm having a local professional who was recommended to me by the guys at the local auto parts store come in and look at the boiler today, and he's going to scope out the situation and give me an opinion.I'm not a welder (probably obvious), just an old drywall finisher, but I'm always interested in other trades and tackling various things on my own.  But this one calls for some professional experience.I live in a farming area, and there's lots of machinery and equipment in need of repair all the time.  This fellow runs a local ag. machine shop and has some experience in welding/braising cast, so we'll see.I was mostly interested in finding out if any of you fellows had tried out any of these new supposedly 'high-tech' rods such as HTS-528, Muggy Weld, or the Cronacast 211.I'd still appreciate any info or experience anyone has had with these rods.
Reply:welcome to the forum but you should let guy's that fix boilers fix it boilers can and will explodeChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:I'm going to a demonstration put on by Smith Equipment on Friday.  Part of the demonstration will be welding cast iron using a special acetylene torch and metal spray welding.  They inject nickel powder into the flame and spray it onto the hot, but not melted iron part.  It is supposed to be far superior to any welding technique and doesn't change the microstructure of the iron.
Reply:i have used one of those torches and there neat we used there chroming to fix nicks in hydraulic cylinder rodsChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
