funny how i can say the gas but can't seem to spell it right, but anyway, does anybody have any experience with the Prop gas ? i just bought a Victor Journeyman set. and am trying to decide which fuel to use. i think based on what the saleman said the Propelyene fuel with be safer to use, and is cheaper than acetylene. and i will have to change the tips i think, but my regulators and such should be ok ? any help and or experience would be greatly appreciated.MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming.
Reply:You need to change the hose, also. Your regulators are ok.You won't regret the switch, if you don't want to gas weld. I use propane. I have a propane forge, so it is convient to cut with porpane too.
Reply:But i do want to gas weld, i like gas welding..... i know i can't use propane, but the Proplyene is almost as hot as acetylene. only like 500 deg less heat than acetylene. Air Gas is selling the stuff.... i was talking to them about it. guess i better stay with acetylene, ya think ? i don't want to have my hands tied with the outfit i got.... ya know ?Last edited by crenshawjm; 10-28-2006 at 11:01 AM.MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming.
Reply:Sorry, I don't know about using propylene for welding. Perhaps they saleman will let you barrow/rent a tank for a day. Or perhaps he knows of customers in M'boro using the stuff. I thought the tip only needed to be changed for cutting operation, not welding. May not need new hoses for propylene.
Reply:If you are welding then you need acetylene to do quality work. Fuel gasses are fine for flame cutting. In fact, I prefer them.

Reply:OK Guys ! ! ! that makes sense to me. i will stay with acetylene, it don't cost that much more and this way i don't have to change anything. plus i can keep the heat up.Tapwelder since your in my area call my cell at 507-4752MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming.
Reply:went to Davis welding and he uses Propylene, but only for Heating with the rosebud and cutting, he said it is not as good as acetylene when it comes to welding, and told me if i plan to do a lot of welding, to use acetylene, that the flame is not as good with Propylene, and the temp is about 400 deg cooler. but if i just setup a rig for just cutting and heating that the Propylene is so much better, and a lot cheaper. you get 3.7:1 useage rate with Propylene compared to 1.2:1 with acetylene. So now i know....Thanks everybody for the input.MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming.
Reply:it might be werth investing in a propain setup for the heat and cut option even if you stay with O/A for welding. big savings to be had there. i was considering it till i got plasma and may still for heating any way. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
