I'm a newbie so sorry for the dumb question, rather ask though then find out the hard way.  I'm looking for a tank for my new welder, a Hobart Handler 187.  I put a post on a few local message boards in the wanted section and have a guy who is offering a CO2 bottle.  I am going to be using the Argon/CO2 75/25 mix and wanted to be sure that this bottle will work.  I'm assuming it will but I want to make sure.  I don't want to go have it filled and they tell me its not the right type or something.ThanksCraig
Reply:Welp, you did the right thing. A CO2 bottle is usually just for CO2. Some are converted dispenser bottles or something like that. They'll work just fine with CO2, but not for anything else. Not sure about the steel ones. If they are the same bottle, it may be a matter of switching a valve. Most suppliers don't like doing that very much. You would probably be better off just going down to the local LWS and biting the bullet with a new to you bottle. That is the best way to start up a good relationship with them. You will also get a bottle that will have a good hydro and not have any issues. No telling what you will get from Harry Homeowner. That said, the HH187 will operate on CO2 just fine. C-25 would be much better, though.
Reply:Shoot, thats a bummer.  Thanks for the info!
Reply:i would agree just bite the bullet and buy from the dealer, the next best thing would be look at the bottle check for the date stamp and any sign of damage to the bottle, new coat of paint is a bad thing and will likely not be alowed by the filler leaving you with a verry prity but untuchable tank. most fillers see a freshly painted tank as an atempt to hid some thing and wont tuch it. this is why i sell tank covers, you will get some realy ugly looking tanks back when you fill. even if you own odds are they will swop out your bottle for one of theres and you get what they have. some people , like me hate looking at that ugly thing behind my pretty new welder. you could also rent a tank for the first year to get a good idea of the size you want to buy, i think the 125 or 155 is the best size but your usage will dictate that and as a rental tank you can change sizes no problem.good luck and congrats on that new welder summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
