Would an arc welder be suitable to build up broken gear teeth on a cast iron gear approx 2.5" OD. The teeth are .110" high. I plan to mill the built up areas into new teeth on a lathe. I am a little concerned the bead may be too hard to mill easily. What type of rod should I use? Here's an example done with brazing:http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb...method-199804/
Reply:Ni-Rod 99 is a machinable nickel based filler for cast iron. You can get it in stick rod or TIG wire. For a gear tooth I would probably try the TIG first.
Reply:The only gear recutting I have ever been involved in was built up with brazing, then recut on a mill. I have no experiance with the Ni-rod so I can't speak to the machinability. At 2.5"OD and .110" tooth depth if you have indexing capabilities cutting an entirely new gear may be the easier option.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe
