What is the difference between mig & mag welding?

Can some one elaborate the difference between mig & mag welding?Last edited by zapster; 06-24-2011 at 04:10 PM.Reason: Spam Spam Spammmmmmmmm in the sig line..

Reply:there is a difference.  There are other here who could elaborate further but MIG stands for metal inert gas.  This is Argon or c02.  Inert meaning the gas has no affect on the weld except to shield it from oxidation, from the atmosphere.  MAG is metal active gas.  This would be a gas like oxygen or helium that is reactive to the arc and affects the temperature or other characteristics of  of the weld and perform a function besides just shielding.

Reply:CO2 is a reactive gas
Reply:It is similar to flux cored welding, accept the weld wire has bead procective properties and also a gas is used co2 to protect the weld so, in respect it has double protection of the weld. it is mostly used for auto body and bicycle or motorcycle framework.wbolden

Reply:I suppose you could say the only true application of MIG is welding aluminium, or magnesium
