Ok im old school and actually prefer standard helmets over auto-dark. I have a Huntsman 411P http://store.weldingdepot.com/cgi/we...ml?id=sEaXyCHoIts getting a little worn out so Im either going to just buy another one or look for an upgrade. The Huntsman I have is made of a fiber that is Super light weight compared to some of the plastic helmets i've seen.Im looking for the lightest weight standard helmet that I can find thats not really bulky etc. Should I just go with another 411P or is there an obvious upgrade that Is avaliable? I need to weigh the Huntsman to cross reference with others but I figured i'd ask you guys also.
Reply:g'day mate, I know you mentioned that you prefer standard over auto-dark, but if super light weight is your aim, check out 3m/speedglas, they make a lightweight model, not sure of the model name or # tho
Reply:I'm normally not a fan of their products, but I have a standard Radnor hood (sold by airgas) and its pobably the lightest I have used.  I've been pleased with it the past year or so that I have had it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The lightest that I've used, and I've tried a lot of the AD's, is the Speedglas 9000XI r 2 a perfessional
Reply:i think the huntsman 411p is the lightest full hood you can buy, Jackson used to make a fiber hood as well, dont know if they still doinsert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:yeah thats what im thinking i guess i'll order another.thanks everyone. case closed
Reply:Huntsman 411P. 6 ounces, I believe. The best !Can't be beat, the same since WWII
Reply:Jackson's Halo X hood is light, but very flexible. I just bought the new Miller MP-10 inferno, but the all black plain is only $35 list. Same hood as the elite but w/o the A/D. Very comfy and well balanced. You will be impressed.JamesDrag Racing is for Fast Cars. Reply:The Halo is useless for anything but flat. Otherwise you get fireballs down your collar and on your chin. Super light weight though. Jackson's Shadow is pretty light with a regular lens and will get in a lot of tight places my TigerHood won't and has great protection for overhead. The Miller Performance series AD I got 2 weeks ago just may be the best hood I have ever owned. I refused to use an AD until about a year ago and tried out my partners just to get him to leave me alone. It is great especially if you have to do a lot of tacking and don't have someone to help hold stuff in place. I found out today I can read a level through the lens. Kind of handy. I even put a solar powered shade 10 in my pancake. Pretty much eliminated arc marks on pipe. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I was doing alot of bench welding last winter and it was killing my neck. I was never a big fan of the ad helmets but I bought a speedglas SL model It is truely super light I dont like using anything else now
Reply:I am interested also. I have a huntsman like yours but its the one with the sliding lense. It is light but its big. Good for shop welding. I also have a pipeliner with the top and bottom chopped off with leather in its place. Also installed a flip lens but it is heavy. Id like to find something light and small that wraps around good and doesn't let a lot of light in from the back. I hate looking down to weld and the hood hits my chest and pushes the hood up. Any suggestions. Never tried an ad hood
Reply:Fibre Metal Pipeliner with 2 inches cut from the neck.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Ill take some pics of mine later tonight and post them. I also put spikes as rivets to hold the leather
Reply:I don't think you can get much lighter than this:
Reply:The lightest and one of the best non automatic welding helmets in the industry. The HUNTSMAN 411P.  It has been around even before WWII.$54.00 and you can use a auto dark cassette and magnifier too.A hell of a deal.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 06-24-2011 at 01:35 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Like I said I have one of those but with a slide lens. I don't like it in the field because it is big. Can't fit my head in congested areas. Great for shop work though.

Reply:Huntsmen rock! They don't clear my glasses (big head!) so I wear a cut Pipeliner with a leather flap.I finally found a goo to stick leather on to helmets that WORKS. 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive.
Reply:Thanks for the info on the glue. I need final finishing touches. My leather has spike rivets but I want the leather to lay flat.
