Another fun job, one of the loader operators at the waste to energy plant backed in to a support column. We welded the 3/4" plate between the flanges to stiffen it up in case of snow :snowman:2 temporary columns are needing to be installed All this work just to cut em' out when the damaged column is replaced. My tool bucket in the man basket. I will post more as this progresses.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Hey Tozzi, did you replace the damaged column right away? If not, why not?Are you guys keeping the old one? Or is it completely trashed.
Reply:There's something I've been wanting to ask since I saw thisHow are the temporary columns loaded before the damaged one is removed.  Do you drive wedges under the temps or something like that?It would scare the hell out of me to cut the damaged column unless the temps were already under stress and carrying the load.  I hope I put the question right.  Thanks man"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The old one is going in there scrap pile. Sam, the temps are wedged up balls tight to the support beam, I had to beat the shims in.  Hopefully I will have the offending unit out today.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Okay,Looks like a decent money maker.  I was wondering if the recycling center is charged for the temp. beams or if you had those "laying" around or did you have to purchase them out of pocket to do the job?  If they are charged with them what is to be done with them when they are removed?   Seems like a waste of perfectly good I beam doesn't it?Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:The temps were just hanging around, when we are done they will go back to the yard. The engineere came by today and said we are good to remove the damaged unit in the AM. He is still amazed the whole roof didn't come down with the damage that coloumn sustained.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Here is more the offending coloumn is out. This is what is going in. :welder:Not me in the Lull, I wouldnt be caught dead in a whit hard hat. Next post.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:But this needs to be done first.Clean up a lill' :wife:Core new anchor bolt holes 2'8" embedment 1 1/4" boltsAnd hammer out enough of the pad to set the cason around the new post so this won't happen again.Still more to come, sorry no pix of the old coloumn coming out. I was wielding the gas axe in the manlift.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Hey, is that guy runnin' the hammer with that control box he has hangin' on him?Maybe I'm just seeing thingsGlad the temps held.  Was thinking about that today.  Dangerous stuff."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Man, for a "Opp's " this is turning into a major project.  How many other company's are involved.  Or is your company doing the whole thing?I am sure his boss sent him back to driving school........

Reply:Here we are again, The anchor bolts are epoxied in. The can is set, and I am doing the rebar set up. Drilled holes for the dowel bars, now alll I gotta do is run the bars and set the new coloumn. More pix later.  :wave2:Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:It's quite a job.  I can't imagine one phase of it that isn't critical."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Used the Lull for everything PITA, all I wanted was a 20Ton Grove with a good operator. Is that to much to ask?Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Lets just say I screamed enough for the whole job when that coloumn was coming down this morningDisclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I don't know anything about this kind of work.  The pictures told a lot.I'd be nervous down in the hole. The splices seem to have very little wiggle room to set the top half of the column in place.  That had to be rough.Did you guys fabricate the columns?  They're beautiful"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:We made the coloumn in the shop, I had 3/8" to 1/2" to get the top half in between the bottom half and the roof beam.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I probably know what the welds were made with on the column  Don't have to rub it in.The old stuff is going on the shelf.  I'm a believer now."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:All the welds done in the shop were E71-T1 Tri-Mark brand Triple-7 dual shield wire.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Hey, before I get out of hereDid you guys make alternate welds on either side working in from the ends?  Or do you have 2 guys working, one on each side?Sorry for the stupid questions."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:When we built the coloumn, weed burner, and stagered on either side, 2 guys welding. Pad eyes were welded to the top section to make my life somewhat easier(it aint ez being me).Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Thanks.  I only get stuff from some limited reading, and maybe not the best stuff.  Heat and distortion have always been important to me.  Still haven't learned out how to really control it, or make it work for me.  I'm kind of on the edge, but not quite all there yet."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Holy crap!! I can't beleive you got all those holes to line up.  I'd have been out there for a month with a rat-tail file, bull pins or not. Does that blue thingy (I think you called it a Lull), have the clamping force to hold up that caison (sp?). I would have thought that the caison would crush, since it's clamped on the ends. Thanks for the thread, from a little guy in his home garage. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Reply:hes not squeezing it its rigged with chokers the clamps are just holding the chokers on the forks to keep them from sliding. A lull is nothing more than a more versatile fork truck its just 4 wheel drive reaches higher and further has 4 wheel or crab steering and you can tilt the whole thing they are nice to have but for stuff like that i would much rather have a craneLast edited by scubaholic; 01-10-2009 at 07:11 PM.Complete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Reply:Is the vertical rebar keyed into the footing, or does it float? The plywood isolator... Is it too keep the concrete from contacting the structural steel (corrosion stuff), or to isolate the steel and concrete for flexing/vibration etc.  Or a combination of all that stuff.?I used to do a little mud work, but NOTHING like this"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The verts are drilled a foot in to the lab and epoxied. The wood around the coloumn is for isolation, should somehow whatever it needs to be isolated from gets through 12yards of reinforced concrete.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Probably the engineer guys are figuring on temperature, and roof load, wind load moving the column a tiny bit.  Wouldn't think a loader could even dent that concrete.  I'd hate to be the one designing that stuff.  A lot of crap to think about. Was a cool job to watch.  Probably nice to get away from Garbage Mountain when it's complete."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Farmersamm:Engineering this stuff is pretty simple for a civil and/or structural engineer actually. Column design, caisson buffer etc, pretty normal stuff if your working on buildings with loading docks or parking lots. A lot of the engineering is table driven, crush zones, compression ratios and the like. It's like any profession when you've done it for a while an expert makes it look easy.My true amazement comes from watch true craftsmen doing what they do best.Excellent job Tozzi.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
