I looked a little, but have not found any just yet./ Anyone got a lead on some 2" receiver hitch tubing made of aluminum? I am looking to make a few light weight carry items, bike racks, lightweight BBQ for tailgating, etc.Any leads on where to find/ price??And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Rojo,Man, I hope you have better luck than I had locating steel receiver tube.Called my supplier yesterday to see if they had receiver tube in stock.  They didn't.  Counter guy says, "Let me do a little checking around and I'll get back with you".Calls back in about an hour.  Starts with explaining that it's mandrel drawn, no inside seam, etc. etc.  Then states it's only avail in 23' lengths.  I state OK.  I was needing an entire stick anyway (building some adjustable height OB motor stands).  How much is it per stick? He kinda pauses, then states, it's $720/stick plus shipping.  Told him I wanted it in steel, not 14 caret gold.  We both laughed.  Then agreed that $720 was crazy.  Anyway, he's now checking out different suppliers. As much work as I've done in aluminum, I don't think I've ever seen aluminum receiver tube.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:The only alooneymum I have seen is on ball mounts and those are 2" square solid bar and machined to specs. The corners are machine chamfered to allow fitment. The receiver itself is another matter, never seen one made from alyuminimum, but....steel receiver tubes, which are 2.5" outside diameter are sold as "combo-bars" and we carry them in various lengths, 6" 12" 24" 36" perhaps other lengths.Search: 2" combo-bar.City of L.A. Reply:Thanks guys. Aevald, you are correct in assumption. I am looking for some 2" material to fit the receiver so I don't have to do a steel to aluminum transition. I'd like it to be a nice clean weld if possible. Tanglediver has it right- so far, all I have found is solid stock receivers. But an 18lb BBQ really doesn't need 2" solid billet aluminum!!!!!I might find some .375 wall thickness and shave the corners to fit the receiver. The only one that would be used over the road would be a bike rack, and as usual, I'lll overkill build it. And if I can locate the .375, it should work well supporting 25lb of bicycle.........Thanks guys!!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Reply:Hello again Rojo, I will try to include a link here that describes the tube that you are looking for. It is from the SAPA company in Portland that I mentioned, the only thing that I am unsure of is whether there are any minimum ordering requirements for this particular extrusion. Reply:Standard 2" heavy wall square tube goes into a receiver. I know I've got some I took off that big trailer rebuild a while back down in my aluminum pile that would work. Looks just like steel square tubing but is made from aluminum.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Metals Depot has 2 inch sq by 3/16 aluminum tube.   4 ft for $50, so not crazy.I would note that I have many times taken my skinny belt sander and ground off the weld on the inside of tubing to slip other tubing into it.   An example would be 1.5 inch square tubing with 1/8 inch wall, and slipping 1.25 inch square tubing into it.   It takes a few minutes to grind off the weld on the inside, I would guess 10 minutes or so.  My local metal dealer thinks that I am insane, shakes his head, and tells me that it won't work, but with the right tool, it is not that big a deal.   When you are done it fits extremely well, in my experience, which is why I do it.  I usually do not need to grind the outside of the tubing at all, although if I insert square bar I need to round the corners and maybe grind a bit off the outside.  I usually just grind off 6 inches or so of the weld, figure that is enough insertion to get the job done.  The sander has a reach of around 9 inches total.I am talking about the belt sanders that are sometimes called power files, such as the 3M™ File Belt Sander 28366.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:My bad.I thought he was looking for the actual "receiver tube" (the female portion), not the male plug in.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:I bought a 20' stick where I live here in Louisiana for about $120-130, something like that anyway. I still have about 7-8' left from my last project. here is the place that I buy from. Reply:Hmm, I see 2 inch aluminum square tube with 1/4 inch wall available at a few places (or at least listed, I didn't call for actual stock availability).  6061 T6.  The Aluminum&Stainless catalog Larry mentioned lists 2 inch 1/4 inch wall 6061 with rounded/radius corners.  Page 7 in the catalog  No prices in the cat though.   On-line metals lists 6061 square 2 inch with 1/4 inch wall at $36.29 for 4 ft, $30.62 for 3 ftDid you try MetalDepot (out in Cali)?  Or are you no longer out in Cali.Solid square billet and then put some lightening holes in it.  Hey, it doesn't get any more "custom" than that!  Wait a minute, you've got a TIG welder!  Take some aluminum plate of the desired wall thickness and MAKE your own tube!  Mill the corners to the desired chamfer!  Custom, custom, custom.    The best laid schemes ...
