For lack of a better term, I've dubbed this the "Cable Saddle 9000 (tm)" and it's the first of two I'm building for the chev!I wanted something that I could wrap the cables around for my welder, but still store in the greenlee box in my truck. Because money is tight right now, this is what I came up with. Basically, you leave a 3 foot tail sticking out, wrap up your cable starting from the machine end. As such, as you need it, you don't have to untangle 100' of cable; it's a big step from where the cables are now (in a pile! ). You unwrap the length you need, weld, wrap the cable back up, unhook and lock it away from prying eyes.I tried to get a weld detail shot, but it didn't work to great! I fit and welded this with the machine in the background. It's a good little machine; I only burn self shieded wire on it, and it works like a h*t damn for square tubing!Anyway, I'll add more pictures tomorrow or friday after I build the second one and wrap the cables up!
Reply:I think it's a good idea. I have some little plastic ones that are made for extension cords, and they're a Godsend. I get awful tired of coiling cord, and it still gets tangled."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Funny storry (or not so funny!)That's where I got the idea in the first place!
Reply:I never got around to building the second one today (I've been waiting for a phonecall ), but I did manage to wrap the cable. 100' of 2/0. The next one should be a breeze to wrap after I build the saddle; 50' of 1/0. Even with only one saddle built, the toolbox is looking more organised! I'd like to build a smaller one for my extension cord, which is currently wrapped around an empty wireframe mig wire spool.Last edited by mb_welder; 02-05-2009 at 08:08 PM.
Reply:That must weigh a TON!!!!!!!!!! Beats gettin' the damn leads stolenCool bed. I've seen pics of beds like those before. They used to, probably still do, have that kind of storage on shipboard beds."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Here's the one for the extension cord. And here's how it is now
Reply:Much better! Not in the box right now; my 7' stinger cable extension (narrower cable) with 200 amp tweco stinger and my helmets, amung other things!Last edited by mb_welder; 02-07-2009 at 08:37 PM.
Reply:I noticed you were spraying. I notice most people seem to want to spray paint their stuff after they've built it.I get rustoleum in a regular can now and brush it on. Seems to go on thicker and holds up better!Plus LESS clean up which is most peoples argument for using a spray can since they don't like cleaning brushes... I'd rather clean one brush (or throw it away and buy another 50 cent brush) than have overspray on everything! I think dollar for dollar it's even cheaper to throw out the brush every time. And no more clogged nozzles!Anyway, I love the cable storage. I might have run a piece of round tube down the middle to put on a spindle for winding and unwinding. |
