I can probably get one of these and a big ESAB 3 phase mig welder w/wire feeder for $1400 or so shipped to my door. I don't have 3 phase, but they come as a package deal so it is what it is. Both machines were manufactured in 2002.Is this going to be hell to learn on? I don't know jack squat about TIG/stick, but Ive been reading this site for a while. I'm not in a hurry to be able to fab bridges or hitches , just want a decent machine to tinker with to start. Got the space, got the power so I figure why not just get one of the big boys and have some fun.The kicker is that no one knows whether either of the welders work ..."unknown condition", and they are too far away for me to go and kick the tires. For my knowledge level kicking the tires means plugging it in and making sure the fan kicks in One plus, I guess, is that the main board in the heliarc is about $450 and the components are off the shelf and can be replaced. this was learned in talking with the tech support guy at ESAB in South Carolina.ESAB Heliarc 252
Reply:"You have to ask yourself, do I feel lucky?"Sounds like the wire feeder and MIG powersource would be worth a good part of the price you paid if resold, assuming they are clean and in good working condition. As for the ESAB HeliArc 252, I have no personal experience with them but all I can say is around here when you look in the yellow pages, lots of welding shops used to proudly highlight their "heliarc" welding capability, Heliarc was an old Union Carbide trade name which ESAB acquired when they bought the welding supply division. TIG or GTAW was seldom mentioned. I have used other ESAB equipment and found it to be of high quality, good as any comparable red or blue stuff I've used.If it were me I'd be tempted, depends on your electrical/electronic capability. Seems that in the worst case you could part out that equipment and get some/most or all of your money back.No risk, no reward. Reply:The H252 is what I learned to TIG on and am still using it. Its a very nice machine, old school, but very nice. I put a digital readout and a pulser on mine and made it even better. They are power hungry being an older transformer design, but they do put out the amperage when properly fed. They have a very good stick arc, too. I got mine as a non-working unit. It had a bad board and the HF was fried. I paid the guy 500 clams for it and the cooler it had and he threw in a ground and two torches. I had to spend another 450 for both the HF and to get the board rebuilt..but after that, the machine was perfect and still is. I was always a blue shop until this machine. Its cheaper to rebuild than any blue unit I have ever owned.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS |
