I am new to TIG...just bought my first TIG welder. I am planning on starting with steel and eventually doing aluminum. How important is it to use a dedicated grinding wheel to shape the tungsten to prevent cross contamination to the tungsten if the grinding wheel had been used on steel?
Reply:I've always used whatever wheel was on the bench grinder at the time. Some of these guys that tig all the time might disagree. I personally haven't had any trouble using the same wheel for tungsten.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Probably not a big deal to use the same wheel for steel and tungsten since the wheel generally wears down to fresh material rather quickly when grinding tungsten. You could use a wheel dresser briefly before grinding a batch of electrodes.
Reply:I've paid no attention to it either, and had no issues.Of course I'm not welding nuclear pressure vessels, but then I'm guessing that you probably aren't either....- John
Reply:i have one dedicated wheel for tungestion..anyone tries to use it for anything else gets their fingers broken.. just because.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You Probably won't notice much difference most of the time. Once in a while, a contaminated wheel will leave a deposit on the tungsten that will really make a mess. |
