I'd like to cover a small plate with 7018 bead but the plate gets way to hot to run the beads one after the other so I've got a few plates that I rotate through. Here are a few from last night. Each line is essentially one 14" rod. I started out way too hot and eventually settled on 75A with 3/32 7018 on the pictured plate. The cleaner beads were run a bit cooler. One thing I notice is that if I really sit there and try to let the pool spread out to 2 or 2.5 times the rod width ... the plate gets red hot and the weld waves just start to stack up. I actually find that it works better if I keep the thing moving a bit faster. - maybe closer to 1.5~2.0 times the rod widthI also struggle a bit when laying bead on the INSIDE of a plate since my gloves have to be over the plate and I can't get quite as low ... I get odd ripples when I remove my left hand or shift it lower on my right wrist ... do folks generally go out of there way to make sure they get a path that is generally unobstructed (sit at the corner of the table, etc) or is there a 'twisting' technique I can employ (I often use a small twist at the very end of the electrode). Finally then, is 7018 predominantly just a 'drag' rod or, in flat position, is there a pattern I want to follow? I could spread the bead out a bit if it is too high and narrow but wasn't sure if I needed to.Just looking for suggestions. Thanks. Attached Images
Reply:7018 is an all position rod, just not downhill over 5 degrees. Drag until your slag peels. Then try rod movement, U pattern is nice, I hardly ever just drag any rod.. Reply:Try to stack them, using the toe of the last to find the center of the next. Straight lines please, or a predetermined pattern.
