I am looking to make some fan blades for a pecan harvester. The fans moves allot of dirt through it and it will eat up regular carbon steel. Does anybody have any suggestions for an abrasive resistant steel to use?Miller Bobcat 250MillerMatic 250Miller 3080 plasmaVictor O/A setupLinclon AC225

Reply:Hello beg, here is a possiblity for some suitable material for your application. I have included a link to a pdf. http://www.jlsteel.co.uk/pdf/hardox/..._datasheet.pdfGood luck on your project and best regards, Allanaevald

Reply:We have used a lot of AR 400, but not for fan blades. If you are planning on doing some welding on it, make sure you check mfr's recommendations for proper pre heat, etc.
Reply:Have you considered Hardcoat anodized aluminium ? one of the most abrasive resistant products known.Simply Crome Plating your existing (steel?) fins will help also, and thats readily available.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:Where I work we have two big coal fired boilers and the draft fans see a lot of sand and ash.  We shut down once a year and touch the runners up with a metal spray pocess from Metalic Bonds, re balance and run it for another year.  The metal spray holds up great.  I second checking in to the welding process for AR plate if used on moving parts.  The welds may pull apart at the HAZ area if not preped right.Dan
Reply:I assume your using a centrifugal fan? Can you line your wear surfaces with UHMW? Simply replace the UHMW pads every so often.
Reply:We have a blower for blowing seperated manure solids that wore out in 6 months with mild steel. I did a ar400 overlay and got 18 months out of it. 100 dollars for material and half a day saved 2500 over a new fan.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Reply:I've never had a problem welding AR400 or Hardox with 7018 or mig. I've used this for 1/8 through 1/2 sheets in compactor and baler floors and wear liners. Thicker material I'd warm it up a bit.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I don't know about fan blades but we line scraper bowls with T-1 steel it's pretty abrasion resistantBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ??
