Hi,Just joined, this looks like a great forum.I've been backyard welding with an oxy and a mig for years, I've just got myself a cheap and cheerful Chinese made TIG and I've got a couple of questions.Firstly, this TIG has pulse mode, which seems like a good thing, but I'm trying to work out when I'd use it. I can tell that it's different to just using less current, but I'm not good enough yet to work out how. Other than the really funky noises, what it the advantage? The other thing is, I'm used to welding with my oxy and I'm pretty sure I've got the muscle memory thing going on. I keep trying to weld with the TIG like I'm using my oxy. I'm learning not to pull the torch back when things get too hot now, so that's an improvement Can anyone suggest specific differences in technique between the two? I'm having no problems with steel, but it seems to be a lot more forgiving than aluminium
Reply:Its pretty much the same as o/a, exept the welds are much cleaner and uniform. There's no need for a circular motion with tig , but I still do it.. Sometimes I find myself pulling away, but Im getting better at that as well. If you dont have a foot pedal, you can move the torch a bit up the path of the weld then back instead of pulling away or use a foot pedal (if youve got one). pulse is great for thinner material. More heat control. Reply:Thanks, I think I just worked out what is stuffing me up.I've got a foot pedal, but no stool so I'm not comfortable moving without losing my balance I know it sounds stupid, but it only just occurred to me...I got it running yesterday, and I just did this:So I'm getting there, consistancy will come with more practice....
Reply:Hmm - No edit button - I'd better be careful with my spelling Looking at the weld, it's obvious I'm using the wrong filler wire, so I cut a strip off the sheet of aluminium I'm using:That's a bit more like it - Might have looked even better if I had bothered cleaning the strip...
Reply:Roger that! Its a bit tricky getting rid of that crater at the end of the weld, but with a bit of practice you can get rid of it (probably a hundred ways to do it). Reply:The right filler rod helps Still working on the crater... |
