Hey guys, new guy to the forum, not new to welding. i have a Lincoin weldpak 100, had it for 8 years. just this christmas i got gas (co2) & hook ups & tip to go with it. i have never used gas before, so i bought the wire (aloy/gas sheilded .035") and tried to weld with it @ B setting, wire speed #2-2.5 (for exhaust ex.)it welds real nice but it spits and sputters like crazy, almost like the metal has grime on it. i tried it on clean metal and it does the same thing. i have reversed the pos/neg terminals like i was supposed to.is this normal with the gas to do this, or is something off?here are some pics of the what the welds look like, keep in mind that it looks like this on perfectly clean metali was told the co2/inert gas mixture was good for light metal all the way up to 1/4" thick. here are the welds:TIA, garry
Reply:How do you have the gas set? Too high or too low is a no go. Try 15cfh and adjust your wire speed for a smooth arc. Your machine may require a differnent setting. Don't try outside in the wind. Solid wire has less penetration at the same setting. You will love gas once you get used to it. Are you using 75% argon 25% co2? And clean the steel. Flux core will tend to float the imputities to the surface gas doesn't and the iron oxide breaks down into iron and o2 and the o2 f**ks up your weld.Thermal Arc 185 TigHTP 200 MigCraftsman O/A1942 Bridgeport Mill12 Ton Hyd PressConsew Walking Foot
Reply:That looks too good to have the polarity wrong but be sure and check that. Most solid wires like DCEP. I'd guess it's just a matter of getting it dialed in for you and each material thickness. And when it comes time for more wire get some .030 for that sized machine. Provides a little wider sweet spot.
Reply:yep polarity was switched too. i found some .025" wire in the garage hidden away and tried that seemed to help A LOT.thankyou for all the help guys, i think i just have to practice with it now to get it smoother.MMG |
