Guys I'm currently a welding student in Alabama, I was wanting to ask some of you guys to tell me what type of joint design, type of processes, and positions the AWS D1.5 Certification is welded and how they are tested, Mechanically, or radiographically. I have been a student now for 3 months and have successfully tested and been certified: FCAW D1.1 3G limited FCAW D1.1 3G unlimited .045FCAW D1.1 3G unlimited .052FCAW D1.1 3G unlimited 1/16GMAW D1.1 2G limited.035Currently I am working on a open root SMAW Certification as well, so far all plates I have submitted to the Lab have all passed X-ray exam with no defects and only 1 out of the 5 certs have had discontinuties and that was only 1 slag inclusion , but I am wanting a D1.5 Certification and wanting know how to prepare and what joints are to be welded. Fillet bend, face and root, or if X-ray is required.Your help and input would be much appreciated..Thanks
Reply:D1.5 is a qualification for welding on bridges. I took mine in the vertical and overhead positions. Plate thickness was 1 inch. Plate length was 6 " i believe. Both had backing plates. You are NOT allowed to use power tools when taking the tests. The weld inspector that watched me kept a close eye on plate temperature. The plates could not exceed 500 degrees F. Required rod size and type is 5/32 7018. The test on the plates is mechanical and I can't remember the specs for slag and cracking. Hope this helps. |
