Last night Weldbead asked me to show how I was gonna flame straighten the "now famous bracket"Use a straightedge, find your bend points, mark 'em if you like, clamp the piece in a fixture(scrap works fine), apply as much leverage as the clamps will take, heat NOT NECESSARILY TO A GLOWING RED, JUST A SLIGHT SHOWING OF RED IN THE SHADE, apply water after heating in short spaced bursts(prevents distortion), repeat until the metal's straight, tightening the clamps after each shrinking.I removed the piece from the fixture to fine tune it by clamping it to a straight strongback, heating on either side of the strongback along the entire length of the piece, then dousing with water again.  The piece was left clamped up to cool to air temp, then removedGonna take 2 posts Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Rest of the pics.Too nice a day to stay cooped up in the "shop".  Headin' out back of the house and intend to contemplate the clouds above the rim of my glassTomorrow the bracket gets welded to the skid, and the ends of the welds on the tabs will be closed off after it's welded in place. Reply:Forgot the pic of the original bending fixture prior to the strongback Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:samm thank you so much!    i got it...
Reply:Samm I thought I understood until the last pict. Are you useing the clamps to move the heated steel? Or are you using the water to cool the steel on the top and cause the top to shrink while the bottom is still warm. ( the 2nd is what I though you were doing untill I saw the last pict.) Or option 3 all of the above. I've frequently done the 1st way with heat and force, but never thought to do it the 2nd way. I'll have to keep it in mind next time I need to straighten something. Thanks.

Reply:Thanks Samm. I wished I had shot some picts of us straightening the 6" C channel rear bumper on the work truck after the guys smashed it into a loading dock. Come-along and chain on the end of the bumper to provide the force and then I just sat under the truck and applied heat to the bend slowly, as they applied pressure. Used the cutting torch rater than the rose bud so we could keep the heat confined to the area of the original bend. Mostly needed to just heat the flanges rather than the web to get it straightened.
Reply:Quote Farmersamm: If you sit back and think about it...... What kind of press would it take to bend the metal the same as the weld you just made. 12 maybe 20 ton press? Heat and cooling, combined with restriction in the joint is a powerful thing-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Yup!Ida just stuck it in this thing and horsed it!  Attached Images#1. Reply:I need to try your method! In past times, I would have heated it and used a BFH to try and get it straight, sometimes over doing it and needing to start over the other direction.#1.
