Newby Alert!...I'm working on bringing some metal fencing back up to snuff.  Today when I was welding, it seemed like I was not able to get a good pooling of the metal going.  I've got about 1/8 inch horizonal pieces with 1/2 inch solid bar for the vertical pieces.  Neither metal seemed to get to a pooling state, but the horizonal piece was glowing red.  I added some filler metal and kept applying it, but it never produced a decent weld.  Any ideas of what might be wrong?I've attached a picture of the metal so you know what I'm welding.  Ignore the date on the pictures and the first picture show my grinding after I had done some welding and it looks like there is actually a weld joint, but during welding it sure didn't flow good.  I'm not sure my image include works, so if there are no pictures - sorry. Thanks for the help. Reply:Sounds like your tip size is too small.  What size are you using and whats the acetelyn and oxygen pressures at.  If you dont get a good puddle in like 5 to 10 seconds go a size bigger.  Remember to focus more heat on the thicker piece..Can roll the fence any?Last edited by Doolittle; 02-01-2007 at 08:57 PM.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:I just grabbed the tip and it's says 0-W-1 on it.  My acetylene pressure is 5lbs and the oxy was between 10-15lbs.Thanks for the help.
Reply:ok acetelyn is good, oxygen should be on 5 as well (though its not as critical as your acetelyn). Im gonna tell you to try a #2 nozzle to start (2-w-1) (that 0 is only for 5/64ths and youll stand there a long time tryin to get a good puddle going).  Its gonna be tricky cause of the 'T' and the thicker steel.  If you can, run a test on some scrap, it might save you a burn through.  You might need to up it to a #3 and keep popping the heat in and out of the 1/8th piece to keep it from burning through.  Hope that helps.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:Doolittle,That sounds like great advice.  I understand what you are saying about blow-through with the pieces being various thinkness.  I really only need to tack this a little and I'll be good.Thanks.
Reply:yep jump the tip up like doolittle said and you should be fine. you realy only need the oxy up to 10-15 for cutting, 5&5 will do fine for welding. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
