I have had the material since the middle of January and finally got a chance to get started on this thing. I had the box broke out 16' X 16" X 48". After thinking about it a while I cut it down to 36" high and welded the ends in. Oreo had checked everything over and pronounced it OK.It was nice today with very little wind and I drug the box over close to the door so I could see a little better to grind it. Then the whirlwind hit while I was grinding. I had the waterhose ready and when I saw the fire start I dropped everything and grabbed the hose. By the time I could get the fire out it had burned a spot about 20' X 30".After the excitement I finished grinding and now I have a 12 guage box without a door.I needed legs so I cut 4 pieces of tubing at a 45 degree angle on the Makita 15" chop saw.I started welding the brackets of 1/8" X 3/4" X 3/4" angle for the grates and got about half of them in when I ran out of .035" fluxcore. By this time I had remembered why I retired.  I ran to the LWS and picked up a spool of wire. and quit for the day. I'm going to try out a couple of Aleve and the Lazyboy and try to get back on this tomorrow.Last edited by Oldtimer; 03-16-2009 at 08:57 PM.

Reply:Oldtimer, If I could ever do a good a job as you do, I'd die happy.  Even the slag looks good.I usually spray everything down before I start grinding.  In a high wind, which we've been having lately, I spray about every 5min.Anyhow, thanks for giving people like me something to shoot for, but I imagine I'll never get there."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Looking good so far!I like the angle on the legs, I bet it would be tough to tip over with those!Ken.#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:"Started MY smoker"Looks like ya were smokin the grass pretty good, too.        A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:looks good ,is that 316 stainless? It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build that matters
Reply:I know better than to trust the wind, especially in March. But I did.  I didn't realise I could still run around that fast until it was all over with. It did get the blood to pumping though. I think I will throw a sprinkler out there and turn it on when I'm grinding next time. That's the third fire since cold weather turned the grass brown. About time I learned not to do what I've been doing.Samm, you wouldn't think it looks that good if I had taken a close up of it. I just drug a 3/32" 7018 around the inside because I rounded the outside corners off quite a bit. Didn't get any arc blow either. I did take a needle scaler to it after the picture.I'm hoping the angled legs will keep it standing up even in some of the high winds we get. The legs are galvanized tube left from a PAYING project I did. The box is 12 ga. mild plate.
Reply:Nice touch with the legs.  I accidentally lit a city park on fire one summer.  The patch was about 40' x 30' square.  It was under a carnival ride that I was called out on to do some repairs.   There were 10 of us stomping on that one.  The firewatch carnies were not paying attention while I was welding.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
