Hi All, Very soon I will be testing for Mig certification with a vertical up bevel test. My problem right now is I'm having trouble finding a technique that is bringing consistent results with just enough penetration. I'm using a 1/8th space ,keeping the tip about an 1/8th from the landing and watching that the wire feed is just on the edge of the puddle as I'm travelling up. My angle is slightly pointed downward to allow for the puddle to be pushed in and also my weave is side to side while keeping a slight pause on the walls. Just wondering if anyone had some good pointers or weaves that proved to work well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Reply:I just took that test a week ago.  I found I had to turn the volts down and wire speed for the second and third pass.Ranger 250, .045 wire, Co2First Pass 20 volts, wire speed 150 IpmSecond  19 volts 137 IpmCovere Pass 18 volts, 125 Ipm.I did a small weave at the root and bigger on second and final pass.I passed the test.  It was PURDY!  I think that makes 3G and the papers say unlimited thickness even though I took it on 3/8 plate with a 1/4 X 1" backer.I find it easier with the bare wire than 7018.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:The inspector told me when I took the test it would say 1".  He said a good root pass is 80% of it and he is right.  I still don't quite do it with 5/32 7018  I end up with too much heat at the top.  They machine it flat then cut into 1" strips and bend both sides.David
