As I progress further and further into the career field of a welder I've heard about our reputations as eccentric reckless and fearless to name a few and tempermentall cranky and unwilling to change for others so it is no surprise to me that I am working with a 6'8" 300lb+ grown man that looses his temper at the littlest things. For instance we share welding machines as well as a welding block and other assorted items and we all have our own tools and supplies for the machines and at the end of our shift we're supposed to remove things like our regulators and torch parts. Well this guy got bent out of shape that I removed his tools that he left hooked up, he also got bent out of shape about the welding chair suddenly reclining ( guess he couldn't figure out that he could lock it so it wouldn't ) and went running to the boss. Thursday I asked him about a locker and if it was empty which he said it was and that I could take it, I cut off the lock yesterday and it has a microwave in it and all sorts of spices. I put a new pad lock on it and when he gets there for his shift he pops a cork about that and then throws a fit about my leaving my work boots on my tool box which is full of my work gear requiring that I leave my shields and hard hat and welding jacket sitting on top. My tool box is 12" w, 12" d, 36" L while he has three tool boxes, and four lockers one which is about the size of a good gun cabinet and the other large enough to hide two of him in. As always when he gets upset he starts shoving things around and letting my supervisor know has done no good. But hey I did clean up the years of grinding dust from behind the lockers and I did get rid of an empty rotted out one and I did organize the air lines and welding lines and blow out the bernard tig cooler radiator and motor but well that doesnt matter for much apparently. Seriously I have a 7 year old drama queen at home, I don't need one at work.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections.
Reply:You just described my old boss to a T. Right down to his height and weight as well. It didn't matter what you did it was wrong..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:It seems like every job site or job has to have at least one a$$hole like that around. Don't go out of your way to antagonize him but don't let him buffalo you either. Remember, generally speaking, if things lead to a fight, you will both be down the road even if he starts it. Never worth losing your job over.Stick it out for awhile and maybe you can get transferred to a job away from him. In the meantime, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, let him know that something he does or says bothers you. If you let him know, he can make life miserable for you. Tough it out, usually someone like that is really insecure when all is said and done. Reply:Wow, your supervisor would do nothing? He is looking to get the company sued?Taken to the extreme, if the company allows one worker to physically intimidate another the company may end paying the salary of the 2nd worker when that 2nd worker is too intimidated to show up.A supervisor should never let a company get exposed to a lawsuit like that. Reply:That's a tough spot. Some times the old guys are the enigmatic types who like to put you through hell to see what you're made of. I don't know what your level of skill is compared to his but it sounds like he has a lot more experience than you. In the automotive biz I had to put up with this crap for a long time. Because I really know my sh*t, older guys take you as a jerk and respond accordingly. Just try to stick it out, and a time will come when they need your help. It also doesn't hurt to query his experience even if you feel you don't really need it. If they feel like you have accepted that they are superior, it can often put the nix on some of the animosity. I'm not saying you should do that forever, but sometimes you have to humble yourself if the job is really important to you. Some guys will say "You don't have to put up with that crap for anyone!!!". Maybe. If you're valuable enough. Most often those guys carry their convictions proudly all the way to the next job, and the next, and so on. You shouldn't take abuse though, and if you actually feel physically threatened or (pardon me) scared he is gonna put the boot up your ***, you need to do something. On the other hand, some guys are just big fat nasty a$$holes. If you're fresh, this wont be the last one you encounter. You are just lucky he isn't the boss. Maybe make his big *** some brownies or something. You know what I'm saying, right?
Reply:I worked with welders over the years that acted like him, got to the point with several of them, I waited for them to strike an arc and then set the bottom of their pants, or shirt or even their bandanas on fire with my lighter. By the time they noticed they were on fire I was busy under my hood. Next time I changed rods I set him on fire again. They come to realize they're as human as the rest of us, eventually...or they don't. I got lotz of satisfaction playing with them. Every time you walk past his machine change the settings, pin the ground lead and the stinger lead together with a rod sharpened on each end. They eventually get the message.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:Some of it was handled today with my new supervisor and the general manager. He doesn't intimidate me despite the fact that he's twice my size and towers over me it's that I am 41 years old and don't have the time or the patience to deal with any kids other than my own 7 years old who's going on16. I can actually transfer out now but I have to get a login glitch worked out with the h r department first.Welding Supervisor Department of Corrections. |
