Been waiting over a month to start this project.  Been working 7 days a week for the last 30 except for one thanks to Ike.Putting the photos up in two posts and this is how far I got this afternoon.  Hope to finish up tomorrow or at least get as far as I can.  The bench will be 38" deep X 80" long X 36" high and is being built all from scrap salvaged from work.Bench top material - 3/16" to be cut to 38" x 80".3 of 4 discarded 9' pallet rack rails to be used.3" X 4" X 1/4" tube for bench legs.Hypertherm Powermax 350 cut.  Sweet machine - I love it!4 bench legs cut to required length using the 'new to me' Powermax 350.Now on to post #2...MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Post #2...First legs and end rail 'sub-assembly'.  Flat bar was to keep the legs off the uneven concrete and space the end rail in 3/8" before welding.Second legs and end rail using first one as a fixture. One of the end rail to leg welds.  Had a little problem with the horizontal to partial vertical up transition.Temporary fit up of front rail to legs and end rails.  Components will be flipped upside-down in the morning for final fit up before welding.A little idea of what the bench frame will look like.  The uncut pallet rack rail is holding the legs and end rails secure for temporary fit up.More tomorrow.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Looking good and it'll certainly be a good base to build things on. Reply:Looks like you are going to have a great bench Duane. With toys like you have now, you can build just about anything. How is the Syncro180 working for you. I am buying my new tig this week or the first week of Dec is the sale is on the one I want.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:with a bench that heavy and sturdy, you might want to put a flat plate with a large jack bolt on each leg for leveling. if your floor is not perfect.

Reply:Thick tops are great. I have a 1" plate and also have 1/4" on top of that which is screwed on. When the top gets crappy I can turn it over and later just replace it with another piece.
Reply:Today's progress.  Again 10 photos so they'll be in two postings.Photos 1-5:Flipped back upright after tacking, all squared up and ready for weld out.Put the frame right to work setting up to cut the bench top to size.  3/8" thick guides worked perfect to hold torch in proper cut position.Powermax 350 cut.  Sorry for the blury shot - didn't realize the camera focused in on the leg instead of the cut.Bench top end cut set up.End cut close-up.  Think I had the torch tipped a bit.Hold on for post #2...MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:...here it is.Bench top frame crossmember cut for fit up.First frame crossmember clamped in place for tacking.First crossmember welded up and ground smooth on top for top plate. All crossmembers in place and almost all welded in.  Ran out of wire and daylight at the same time.Bench top set in place to show what it's going to look like when finished. Some idiot put a pile of 500HP 'Kitty-Litter' in the middle of my shop so I couldn't just move inside and keep going!  Have to pick up from here later on.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Duane, that plasma cutter is the bomb!!!!  I've fought these things for years.  Old Fart mentality. That cut is ready for a very light machining.I wish someone else had also posted pics of what these things can do.  It wouldn't have taken me so long to become a convert.  I have to apologize to everyone who I've given crap to about these things.  Wow.The Cat will definitely find a temporary home pretty soon.  Could I drive the Dodge on it for some good pics"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Looking good so far.  And nice cuts with the plasma. When you're done, you'll just have to rig up a giant water tank and do the electrolytic rust-removal on it.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:MONDAY NIGHT UNDER THE LIGHTSRan down to TSC after work and grabbed the last 10# roll of .030 they had and finished up the frame tonight 'under the lights' by adding the the lower back rail and end supports.Monday night under the lights.Using the end supports to align the back rail.Oh yeah - one of the welds.Frame finished and ready for the top plate.Due to the rest of the weeks work schedule I won't be able to get back to it until the weekend - that is unless I have to work it.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Originally Posted by TractapacI'll echo those thoughts. (well, apart from the OFM!)Is the "heat soak" any different from doing the same cut with OA? I figure the cleaner and newer the metal, the better the cut. Is that what you've found? Also I suspect rust beneath the cut would give about the same results as OA.What specs is your plasma, single or three phase? Back to the table, it just gets better. I've got a big table I bought but can't get it in a shed at the moment and the shed might be a year or two away yet.
