i,m trying to make a drivline brake and i need to know how to weld steel to my cast yoke so i can turn a rotor on my lathe, i have a 155 lincoln flux core,or oxy acc with cast rod, is this possible with what i have? thanks marti9
Reply:I suggest you figure out what the hell you are doing in the first place....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Zap the only reason he's making a driveline brake is so he can help stop the 10K trailer he's building to haul a 15K tractor on. Geez. It's only going to be on the road and put others lives at risk...what's the big deal?
Reply:Your way out of your league here.   AT best you need to look into getting a custom yoke machined to accept a bolt on rotor.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:zap quit being an *** i,ve seen it done before i,m just building a s10 mud dragger toy it will never touch the road BCTimberwolf, thanks for the help anyway and dont trip over your egos.dicks

Reply:Marti9  -  Steel and cast-iron can be successfully welded; but, in service, only for static loads.  Everyone else has [and will] expressed why you are on your own on this one.     Opus

Reply:The yokes are forged, as I remember the mini-rod tractor guys used 7018. Like most hot rod things the drive shaft is the last thing built...Are you setting this thing up with rear brake steering?Matt
Reply:They do make pinion brake kits that arent that expensive. The hardest part is making the caliper bracket and welding it to the diff housing. What you really need is a flange instead of a yoke. You make an adapter plate to bolt the rotor to flange and then build the caliper mount. I would build a bracket that bridges the axle tubes and will bolt to the diff housing so that you arent welding to any cast. What axle are you using for this rig? They make bolt on kits for rockwells for under $100 if you supply the caliper. This is a lot easier on an axle with a drop out pinion like the rockwell or 10.5 14 bolts as you can replace the pinion bolts with longer ones or studs and use that to hold your bracket on. Flanged pinion yokes should be available for most axles. Try calling Tom Woods drive shafts and telling them what you want to do, they can probably put something together for you to make it easy and nearly bulletproof
Reply:no rear steer matt and iron man its a 10.5 14 bolt that i,ve already plated over the diff for my upper links so making a brackit for my caliper is not the problem its putting a disc at the yoke as far as these other guys i was just wondering if it was possible with what i have but i guess there to big to help the little guy that cant afford the best tools, thanks matt and ironman
Reply:Sorry to be so harsh there marti..But your first post is just a tad hard to understand from my point of view..And you wont be able to do what you want with what you have...Enjoy the place and pay attention to what those that KNOW tell ya....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:why are you so set on a driveline brake? it can be done....but the real question is if it can be done safely and for cheap without special tooling? doubt it. Have you researched to see if anyone sells a kit out there? Not saying you would have to buy their kit but you may be able to copy it...maybe if you post up your location you could get someone with the experience to help ya. Just throwing out some things to think about
Reply:I drove a '65 F-500 wrecker with a very small drum brake attached to the driveshaft at the tranny that was engaged with a lever in the floor...That was the brake for when you had the truck in neutral for the P.T.O.No wonder why I used to chain the front of the truck to anything I could when pulling someone out of a ditch.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:ive seen people modify 4wheeler disk brakes to use as a driveline parking brake.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Am I lost; or is this a Mechanic's Park question,and not a welding question ?    Opus
