3G Vertical mig test help

I have to take a 3G mig welding test soon and wanted to see if anyone had any tips? The test is on 3/8 steel and Alum.(2 diffrent test)plate using a bevel on both plates and a backing strip thats what I have been told,and I have to weld up olny...any help would be great. Thanks
Reply:Have you practiced them? It is all the basics applied to your utmost. Clean fit up by the specs, preheat anything 3/8" and up. Did I mention preheat?Keep it flat, no fat bellied beads. Oh, first check your preheat.No cold starts, melt the toes and move across the center quickly, side to side. An inverted Vee motion works good, after you preheat.Clean between passes, but remember a wire wheel on a grinder acts like cold water.Once you reach preheat temps and put in your root pass, you clean that out to shiny metal, fill all the way up to within one bead of the face.Watch inter-pass temps, keep them stable.The cap is your signature, but first pre-heat.Don't forget to preheat.Did I mention pre-heat, no? Reply:You can't just really ask for tips for vertical or overhead since they are all based on your how move. Practice is the only way to be sure your doing it right.Hope you do well, post your results!
Reply:Just did this last month (still need to be xrayed). Struggling through 4G now ...MY ADVICE: Check your wire and gas supplies BEFORE YOU START!Few things worse than running out of either halfway through (don't ask how I know).HTH

Reply:I'll be running .035 solid and I forgot to metion that it has to be pulse on a millermatic 350, I have a millermatic 350 at work so I can try it out. I tryed it out day and I can't figure it out how to get it set.
