We CNC'd out some 3/4" and 1/2" formally 400 for a brush rake and claw.  The rake can be unbolted so he can use the back side of the claw to grind stumps and crush things.  It worked great at snapping our stickers at work.  I took a video of it, but for some reason I cannot convert it nice enough to post on youtube.  The job was bidded at 1900.  We're hopefull that we can find a place in the market for them. Reply:What size excavator is that grapple on.  Just curious as to what class excavator you built that one for.  The work looks great that grapple would be very helpful on a large clearing job to remove stumps and load up a tub grinder with debris from the job definitely faster than a bucket with a thumb.

Reply:The tests are gonna be pretty cool.I build tinker toys compared to something like this, so I'm not any expert.Do a stall, snag, and drag test. If you can idle up the machine, place something that won't crush in the jaws, and hit the hydraulics without a bend or major deflection, ya got a winner.Same with using the machine to pull, sideswipe, snag, etc. something that's pretty solid.  If it doesn't move, it's good to go.The tubing holding the teeth are what you want to really watch.  If there's movement, it might pay to fab up your own oversize custom box tube extending clear to the back of the jaws.I dread the first time I test something.  It's a nail biter. If these prove to be popular, It'd be cool to "etch" your name into the outside teeth.  The plate's gonna get torn off.  I don't know how you'd do it, but it would be pretty neat, and still be there after a lot of years of use."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Hell, lookin' at it again, I'm not sure I'm right.  The heavy equipment guys will know better.  I probably am steppin' outside my circle."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Might want to contact these folks as they sometimes have to remove salt cedar brush in water and mud.http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges...que/about.html
Reply:I learned my lesson with building cutting edges and attachments.  Unless its for an owner operator, you make sure to durability test the living hell out of it before you ever send out of your sight.side loading and snapping mounts would be my main concern.   other than that it looks sweeeetVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Nice project. Were those cut on Oxy-Acet or plasma?
Reply:Ok as an operator and welder. good looking product i can tell you right now the "tines" per say will get bent to hell in a hurry and the very bottom at the points. also maybe on the center ones where the thumb comes in contact make it double think on the "tines". need a tester send it my way my guys can destroy anything and i don't know how they do it. Magic powers i guess. they actually ripped a tooth off a bucket shank and all. this same bucket they also ripped the mount off the bucket. and this is all on a bobcat backhoe. not something huge
Reply:It's mounted on a Kubota KX161-3 ( http://www.kubota.com/f/products/kx121.cfm ).  I dont think the machine is big enough to do much damage to the teeth.  The plates were plasma cut.. AR cuts pretty nice with minimal cleanup afterwards. Etching would be nice.. I think if we turned down the plasma and cranked up the speed, we might be able to pull something like that off.  But the problem would be when the plasma turned for a new direction.  It has built in software that tells it to slow into corners so it wont destroy the gantry system.  I'll have to play with that a little. Here's a really crappy video of it in action without the rake attached. Notice the huge pile of recycled stickers under it.. We were having a little fun that day.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Jeez !! I could use that on my mother inlaw .....
Reply:ok watched the video good product. I will warn you on the hydraulic cylinder if you curl the bucket into the thumb and push it up like in the video you will blow out the seals pretty quick. The curl cylinder is much larger and more powerful. I end up rebuilding my thumb cylinder once a year atleast from the guys curling it in. Just some friendly advice
Reply:Thats a good looking fabrication all the way around. That being said the only way you can operator proof anything is to make it so heavy  its unusable so don't feel awful when its unrecognizable. I rebuild ground engaging equipment  and what ever its attached to for a living and I swear there has to be school somwhere  that teaches heavy eqipment mangulation.
Reply:i may have to buy a backhoe/trackhoe so i can get a claw and then tear some stuff up...neat build-Graham-Mechanical EngineerAutosport Mechanic/Fabricator
