Material is #4 rebar cut into 30" lengths. They need to be cut in half on a 45* angle so they can be driven into the ground. I think the customer goofed. I was supposed to MAKE 1,000 of them. They ordered 1,072 pieces that needed to be cut in half.So My son ran two saws and cut em up like crazy. I have never seen him work so hard. The piece of wood is 15" long and keeps the rebar from rolling in the vice. While this saw cut ONE bar, This one cut 6. It took about a day. There were a 140 48" ones that needed to be cut in half too. Both saws ran all day. The blade snapped by the end of the day on the harbor freight saw.Last edited by David R; 04-05-2009 at 02:35 PM.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:hey! looks like we have the same bandsaw. what size of blade does the blue one use?only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:The welds were .030 Lincoln wire, Pulsed spray 92/8 gas @ 500 ipm. It was hot!Positioner was turned all the way up to 8 Rpm.They go by pretty quick. !/2" flat washers, NO zink coating. There is some oil on them, but I don't have to clean them off either, I tried one and it worked, so .......I leave the rod sticking up about 1/8" above the washer.Last edited by David R; 04-05-2009 at 02:49 PM.Real world weldin. Reply:Go to Enco for good cheap blades. I'll look at the size tomorrow.I have used it a lot. No problems. I set for as fast as it goes when I bought it and never even used the original blade. Nothing got hot except the motor on the harbor freight. Its the second motor.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Man...I have to ask WHY?I wonder what they are using them for. Rebar isn't a very good nail. And they make spikes like that. You think it's cheaper to pay a guy like you to make those than to buy premade nails? I dunno. I just keep wondering. But who cares! You got a paying job, right? That's awesome! I am hoping my son can help me out too. He's not quite ready yet. Reply:the spikes hold parking lot bumpers down to the blacktop. The washers keep people from stealing them. The rubber factory is just down the street from me.I'll give em a plugRUBBERFORM http://www.rubberform.com/I have asked a few places about 14" nails and no one has them. Still looking for a price.Last edited by David R; 04-05-2009 at 07:10 PM.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I googled it. funny.Globalindustrial sells em for $1.50 each! But they don't look like they have a 45degree cut on the end. They look welded like yours. Reply:Only thing I came up with was Galvanized Landscape spikes. They are 12 inch by 3/8's with a nail head on them. The heads are not as large as those washers. Now that I know what you are using them for I guess rebar is a-ok. I wonder why anyone would want to steal a parking bumper though. Reply:Thank you for the price, I have to re negotiate today. I told them when I took the job I had to make money at it or I would not do the job.As its quoted right now, I can almost make my hourly rate.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:David,I know you love your positioner, but for that small diameter, and the time to load each piece, it was probably not practical?I'm picturing a fixture of several tubes in a row, so 10 nails could be stood up straight with the washers sitting in place. You could quickly weld one after another on down the line, while your helper replaces welded with unwelded ones behind you. One idea.

Reply:To all you trappers, I've seen it done. Yer a bigger man than me. Today I took one and tried to break the head off it. NO WAY. I bent it in the vice and abused it with a 2 lb hammer from the bottom side. I gave it to the customer today for a sales tool. I also pointed out how sharp they were because they were sawed, not cut with an abrasive wheel. David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'd be curious to hear any feedback you get on how well they work. I've installed my share of bumper blocks on asphalt, and I always used blunt rebar, but took a hammer drill and pre drilled the holes. Not my idea of a great time either way! |
