What processes are common for welding copper. I am in need of doing some 3/32" plate. What tungsten, polarity, filler, pulse schedule? Can't say I've ever had the need to do this before!I could easily solder it, but when the end product is finished and polished, all copper would look better.
Reply:I don't know a lot about copper, but I do know that if you are looking for an astecticly pleasing polished final product, you have to use filler material that came from the same batch of copper as the plate, idealy the scrap from cutting it, otherwise the weld bead will be a slightly different color than the plate. Also I beleive that Tig is the dominate proccess for copper welding.
Reply:I am curious about this also. I don't have anything to weld like this but I saw that tig was used for it.
Reply:I believe that you need Nitrogen as your shielding gas and DCRP, but dont hold me to that. I am meeting with the Welding God for another cert today and will ask him.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I finally got my TIG at home going the other day, was screwing around with it, and welded some common copper plumbing pipe.  I simply fusion welded around a straight coupler slide over the end of some 1/2" pipe.  The weld flowed nicely (Argon DCEN), but the coupler and a good portion of the pipe were surface oxidized because the heat had spread so fast.  May faster (higher current) weld to prevent heating so much pipe, and may need auxillary shielding to protect a broader area.  I'll give it another shot one of these days.
Reply:What exactly is it you are doing? I have experience with copper. I make use large bus bars that used in plating processes 3/8" 1-1/4" thick material._________________Chris
Reply:I had just recently tigged copper for some guy whop wanted his moonshine still repaired. Copper welds just as good as steel using all the same tig setup .It just has a higher melting point than steel.  Like Pulser says it fuses nicely - I actually had some copper electrode but it worked much nicer without it.  Hell , I dont even know why I would bother using solder again .

Reply:Playing around one day, I butt welded some 1/8" copper plate using some 10ga solid wire for filler. It came out really nice, but used alot more amps than I expected. I was on DCEN using Argon at about 150amps.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:cant you use silicon bronze filler metal to weld copper to steel?  kinda off subject just wondering if i was right

Reply:Someone once welded a copper water tank filler neck to a 304S SS tank for my ex race car , it still holds nicely as the car's expansion tank, doesn't look that nice though(more like brazing, he used  a stick-like piece of copper leftovers and kind of melted that bit with minimum puddle on the stainless...)Idealarc 300\300 TIG AC\DC
